Fish Stocks Limited is a voyage like no other with plenty of tax-free spirits onboard. The style ranges from the absurdly Melvillian (“Call me Fishmael”) to the Pratchettesque (we meet a character called Stan who sells “post-insurance” to people who have just been robbed). The start sees Ambrosius Codwich falling from his lofty hooktree home towards the dreaded Mist Sea below, the domain of fish and ghosts. Ambrosius’ life flashes in front of him as he falls. He realises just what he has missed out on – in particular the only girl he ever loved, Sunbeam Lightning, who has married the wrong man. He also has to face up to being fishless for his whole life, a great shame amongst the Piscadors.

But Fate has plans for Ambrosius; before he hits the ground he is caught by a dangling fishhook, ripping off his trousers but slowing him enough to save his life. He hits the ground. Without sparing a minute the young fisher turns to scale t.. (Read more)

Disguised as a gripping, humorous fantasy adventure, with echoes of Pritchett, Adams, Melville and others, this is an exploration of the dilemmas, moral and otherwise, which we all could face. Set in a strange but compellingly drawn fantasy world, it follows the trials and tribulations of our hero as he is drawn through a moral minefield. The narrative is so lively ,the descriptions so vivid, the plot so entertainingly constructed that only afterwards did I realise the depth and scope covered: the nature and roles of chance, free will, fate, religion, unrequited love, courage, perseverance, despair, greed, avarice, heroism, redemption and fall are all part of it. Fast paced , full of humour, cleverly plotted and constructed, it’s one of the best reads I’ve had in a long time. It’s a cliché but I couldn’t put it down until I’d finished it . Bring on the sequel!

Michael Summers is a master wordsmith. His work, Fish Stocks Limited, exhibits the potency of an able and experienced writer--a true storyteller. Although, for me, the initial steps of the story left me wondering where the journey led, as the curtains drew back, the craft of the master proved itself a tonic of powerful penmanship . Not alone is Michael Summers a pen master, his use of the English language is stunningly apparent as he spins and weaves his literary genius. Fish Stocks Limited will test the reader's power of concentration but such a journey into the mind of Michael Summers will indeed prove enriching, rewarding and educational.
