Ever since I published Shadow Of A Sword, which concluded the Realm of Essences trilogy, readers have written to ask for more stories from Onteora County, New York—particularly stories about protagonists Louis Redmond, Christine D’Alessandro, and Stephen Graham Sumner. It’s been at once a flattering and a baffling thing to confront: flattering, because there’s never been a writer who was other than thrilled to hear that his readers have loved his characters as intensely as he has; baffling, because having tied off all the central plot threads and animating ideas of the Realm series with Shadow Of A Sword, I’ve felt I’d prevented myself from pushing those characters any further forward. (Louis, of course, is the greatest challenge of the bunch, being somewhat dead.)

But if going forward in time presents a steep challenge, going backward is a shallower one. There are certainly crannies to be explored within the Realm timeline. Indeed, I’ve already probed a few of them in.. So I’ve taken the already-written stories and added a few new ones to produce this modest homage to the characters I’ve loved and tortured these past fifteen years.

You might have seen slightly different versions of some of these tales in other places, or in one of my other collections. My apologies if that treads inappropriately on your memories. It isn’t always easy to make a coherent set out of stories that were written over a long period. I’ve done what I can to avoid unduly “re-flavoring” any of the older stories, though for $0.99 you’re certainly free to disagree.

At any rate, I hope you enjoy this little trip through Onteora’s past and near future. As a parting gift, in the Afterword you’ll find a bit of “genesis material,” and a related, semi-humorous true story about an event in the aftermath of the creation of On Broken Wings that caused me to wonder just how much truth there is in the “racial consciousness” theory of artistic creation.
