Permit to Work- "I know you got a good side. When that wire brush was eatin' me up at the plant, it was you that jumped to help me." The Ibara Chronicles- "What are you smiling about?" Dee said. "You'll see." Brad knew it was not applause she cherished, it was the satisfaction of bringing words and actions into a believable story. It was the same reason he was writing."

William Delaney's debut offering, Everybody Comes From Somewhere, draws you into an era when hard work and a moral compass ruled everyday life. And while these short stories provide a glimpse into that innocent era of the 30s and 40s, they are also tinged with the characters' struggles with poverty, unrequited love, and abuse. The people that Delaney describes move in a world that no longer exists, and Delaney's ability to bring that world back to life enriches all of us. A selection of poems and photographs accompany the short stories, and they are equally enjoyable. This is great read for anyone who appreciates good writing.

I always think the mark of a good writer is one whose writing makes me wonder if the story they are telling is real or made up. That’s what I enjoyed so much about Everyone Comes From Somewhere by William Delaney. In this grouping of unrelated short stories are tales that made me stop and ask that question. At one point, I even Googled one of the named characters to see if they ever existed. But exist they do--in Delaney’s world, one where he asks us to join him. Each of the characters questions their contribution to the world. They live and they hurt and they love, and ultimately they adapt to the circumstances given to them. Sometimes the endings are not what you either expect or hope. Besides giving us his vision in writing, Delaney also allows us behind the lens of his camera, capturing still moments of his surrounding. The stories were quick reads, but the message behind them will stay with you long after the story ends.

From a small rural farming community of some eight hundred people in Upstate New York in the 1930’s and 1940’s there emerged a professional baseball player,
a Phd, an orthodontist who pioneered techniques for straightening teeth, an ophthomologist on the list of the hundred best eye doctors in America, and a number of professionals in a wide variety of fields. William Delaney grew up among these individuals and knew them well. His book captures the life lessons they learned in their youth. It is a must read for anyone trying to identify what needs to be done to encourage the next generation to excel and compete in a global environment.
It is a treasure trove for anyone raising children looking for the proper mix of discipline and love needed to assure they will have a successful and fulfilling future.
