Title: Shadows in the Dark
Author: LD Hutchinson
Length: 139 pages
Genre: Paranormal/Urban Fantasy

Shadows in the Dark by LD Hutchinson is a tale about Avangeline, a woman who is out of place in this world. Phoenix is the vampire sent to protect her, against his will.

I will state that this is the first story I've read by this author, and the initial prologue led to confusion for me. On a whole, there was so much information provided, names and vague dates to follow, that the information would have been better suited to being woven into the story as smaller bits of exposition. Another item that was complex was the prologue's apparent presentation of a letter to someone. Nearly half the prologue had passed before I realized this was the author's intention and adjusted my reading to fit. A salutation of some sort would have been pleasant from the reader's standpoint. Despite the difficulties, the blurb had caught my attention so I continued.

Avangeline as a character was enjoyable and I felt I could readily identify with her. She had an easy train of thought, well displayed reactions to people and situations, and was likeable. The flaws that she did have were implemented in just the right way to make the reader believe she was a real person being written about, even if she was a little eager to dismiss bad things happening to her. Phoenix, on the other hand, was less personable for me. Often I found him less interesting and flat from a characterization point of view. A cliched appearance might have led to my initial dislike. One expects blue-black hair, impossibly tall, and striking eyes from a vampire, but dull dialogue and predictability cinched it.

I don't want it to be misconstrued that I didn't like the story. As a reader, I enjoyed it. That is why I'm giving it 2 1/2 stars. (My rating system is as follows: 0=hated it, 1=disliked it, 2=okay but not for me, 3=liked it, 4=really liked it, and 5=loved it.) As a fellow writer, I have to say the Ms. Hutchinson has talent. She has a seamless way of blending action and scenes that is not easy to develop – brava! As an editor however, I pulled out my red pen because there are several places where editing tripped me up and pulled me from the story. I also think this should be priced more at $0.99 since it is not a full novel. A full-sized e-book is generally priced at $1.99 or $2.99.

Despite the somewhat steep pricing for a novella and the editing troubles I ran across, I did find the concept of the story interesting. Many authors attempt to combine witches and vampires, without success; Ms. Hutchinson however did a good job of it. My overall estimation of this tale is a good one. I will look forward to future installments in the series. (I understand there are to be several more.) I will also look to see how Ms. Hutchinson progresses as a writer and how her stories are impacted.

2 and 1/2 stars. I don't give this book two stars because I have issues with the author. Personally I think she is a great artist... That is her talent. Her book was not bad but I found it hard to read, slow. I previously rated and reviewed this book without having finished the book. I never did finish it so my review shouldn't count. There are reasons I didn't finish reading it and it was simply bc I didn't have time, and it was not in my opinion something I would choose to read. I have not read her other books. I just want others to know that what little I did read was no offense to the author not something that made me sit up and go HOLY COW she is good. LD is not a bad writer, I just think she should do what makes her happy. For what she charges, it's worth the read, if you have nothing else to read. I know this review sounds biased but its not. I have thought for several months on how to review this. I talked to others who told me to be honest. At the time I faked the review I didn't want to cause drama so like many of us I gave her what she wanted and I was wrong. I have a twisted view on what I consider a good book. I don't think I am a better writer, I don't think that this is a competition. I wish her the best. I think she could do well if she slowed down and tried a little harder. She has a great imagination but chooses not to use it to her full extent. When you are passionate about something it shows. I have nothing personal against the author, I honestly choose to not associate with her because of her behavior which has nothing to do with her book. The two stars stand for an overall score. I rarely give anything less than 4 and when I do its only 3. I prefer to not review the book at all. In this case I felt that I do not want to be judged as a bad reviewer, a liar, or like some who have reviewed me base the book on the author... that's not me. So to fix my mistake I went back and gave her a one star and contemplated my review. The overall idea/plot is a 4 star but she has no passion. She simply puts words on the paper. Her characters to me seem fake. Like she is taking her own personal desires and casting them into her characters. A lot of authors do. Other than that and editing it was not the worst book I have read. Far from it. Lots of people prefer different types of style and this is simply not mine. As an author I give her at least three stars. For the book two and a half stars. I know that she may take this personally and can delete it if she chooses. I mean no offense only that like some people I cannot say this is a great book, its not something I would buy in paperback. I may try her other books in the future. I should have finished the book before I reviewed her and I should have given an honest one. So I apologize, retract my previous review, and hope this doesn't sound horrible. We should never review a book and lie, exaggerate or bc of fear fake a review. It is the only one I have ever done. I'm not much of a reviewer but when I do I want it to be with complete honesty. I suggest you read this book for yourself, it happens to just not be my flavor if you get me.

This is the first book I’ve read by L.D. Hutchinson. It’s about Avangeline, who is quickly pushing to a world she never knew existed and finds out she is not as “normal” as she thought she was. When I started reading I have to say that the Prologue was a little confusing to me. After a beginning it and getting lost in the rush of it, I skipped the remainder of it and went on to reading the first chapter and enjoyed the book. Besides the prologue the only drawback I would say is that it was too short. I just finished it and am ready to start book two. I look forward to reading more from L.D. Hutchinson and would recommend this book. I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars.

I gave this 5*s out of 5*s because I thought it was a cute little story and great characters. It got straight to the point with very little details! I like stories that get straight to the point. There could have been a little more action but I believe that the way the story ended that there maybe more action in the next one.

YA read !!! I liked it's quick pace and lots of dialogue. This is the first in a series by a new author. I was left wanting more details of the history behind the characters and with the story. It was a bit choppy and segmented at times, the flow was off. And there were some spelling and grammatical errors which further slowed the flow. I am looking forward to the next in the series in hopes that the loose ends are tied up. ***3 1/2 stars

Shadows in the Dark is LD Hutchinson's debut novella, the first of a series encompassing a novel.

LD Hutchinson has an intriguing concept with Shadows in the Dark. She's combined vampires and witches in a very novel way to my knowledge thus far, though we don't know much more than that. Why? Well, I was hoping this book wouldn't be only the first part of a bigger novel, given its price, but it was at just under 16 thousand words, which makes for a disappointing ending simply for the fact that I can't continue reading until the next book is released in July. The author has told me there will be approximately five to six books in the series.

Avangeline is a young woman without much of a past, but is destined for something far greater than she ever possibly imagined. She's not a very strong heroine, at least, not yet, save for a brief moment, but the potential is there. This first part of the series shows us the very beginnings of what she learns about herself and her fate.

Phoenix is the vampire sent to protect her, and he's not real thrilled about the job. He starts out interesting and then suddenly turns into a jerk shortly after Sarah, Avangeline's best friend, mentions that he's . . . well, a jerk. He seemed very childish in nature after that point and made me almost not care about him, yet I'm intrigued to learn more.

The prologue is intended to be read as a letter from one character to another, though I wish it had been clearer about its intent before the end of the letter. The second person point-of-view threw me at first. A salutation at the beginning, or italicizing the text would have been helpful. The rest of the story is in first person POV.

I am, however, very curious about the history involved with this story—the vampire clan history. I really liked what was mentioned of it and expect to learn more in the future releases.

As a reader, I liked the story, which is why I'm giving it 3 stars (my star rating system: 0=hated it, 1=really disliked it, 2=disliked it, 3=liked it, 4=really liked it, and 5=loved it), and because I'm curious enough to continue reading the story, so kudos go to the author for that. It's a difficult feat with me. As a writer, it holds a few similarities to my own vampire book series, but only a few, and reminded me of a few things I need to clarify down the road. I thank the author for that. As an editor, I wanted to get out my red pen because it is in desperate need of a good edit by an experienced editor, and it should be priced at $0.99 simply because it is not a full novel. A full-sized debut ebook would be priced at $1.99 or $2.99. But, as I said, I really liked the concept, but think it could be so much better overall.

If grammatical and punctuation errors don't bother you as a reader, then you'll enjoy this short novel. If you're an editor like me, be warned because you'll want to get out your red pen too.

I do believe that, much like the storyline, this author has a lot of potential to grow into a wonderful writer. I wish her the best of luck and look forward to reading the rest of this series.

The name itself sounds mysterious and intriguing. The book follows Avangeline Lenzo as she finds out more about her true self. Each character in the book is different which makes you want to know more and read more about them. The plot so far seems amazing! I only wish that there was more...
This book is just a part of the bigger novel, which I hope gets released soon!! Can’t wait to read what happens next...

First let me say I love paranormal books. There is something about them that really gets me into reading them.

Now I got this book for free to read and review. I gave this book 4 stars I so wanted to give 5 stars. But the story was way too short, it is an excellent story one that I would have finished last night. But of course I was way to tired to finish it so I finished this morning. I hope this book would be part of a series, because the ending leaves you hanging and wanting more. Will Angie become what she is suppose to become?

The story had action and was overall a wonderful read. I just hope the author has more of this story and is hoping to write about it soon. Because I can see myself reading more!

Shadows in the Dark is about a girl named Angie who starts off with breaking up with her boyfriend. Her and her friends go out to a club and Angie gets a bit tipsy where she meets a guy who takes her to his car. While in the car he tries to bite her. Next thing you know Angie wakes up in her bed and wonders if she dreamed what had happened. The next night she goes to another club with her friend Sarah and her boyfriend Anthony. There she learns something that her friend has been hiding for years from her. Something that is paranormal. In the midst of all this her ex boyfriend is coming for her. And Phoenix is her protector, because Angie is not a normal human. Angie has to take the place of one of her family members. It is time to train!

This is the first book I have read by this new, young author. From my understanding, it is the first of several shorts that combine to be a novel. It has a good plot and the characters are unique. The author has her own style of writing, it is creative and mysterious. She leaves you wanting to know what happens next with Angie and her friends. I hope to see the author continue to grow as a writer with her upcoming books in this series.
