Personally, I would classify Tattoo as a psychological thriller instead of a horror story. Cooley goes to the dark places in the mind and fills in some of the blanks. He leaves just enough room for your own imagination to make everything as scary as possible. Thorough research on the subject of tattooing made this believable. Frighteningly so. I enjoyed the element of suspense and was left wanting more. Well done.

Tattoo is a superior horror novella. It's decently written, bordering on evocative throughout and occasionally getting all the way there. Cooley's scene-setting is particularly good. His characterizations, though not always perfectly convincing, suggest that he's put significant thought into how to bring a character alive. The plot itself isn't perfectly original, but the treatment is good enough to avoid making it purely a homage to its antecedents.

If Tattoo has a serious problem of any sort, it's that it could only end one of two ways. I don't mean to suggest that the ending is telegraphed; however, one could guess at it and have a fifty-fifty chance of being correct. Then again, horror tales are often like that; the genre itself imposes constraints on how such stories must develop and end, constraints the author dare not take lightly.

I plan to keep track of this writer.

Very well done, concrete characters and a well developed plot make this one a great read. It's hard to tell where the story ends and reality begins. Bravo

Paul Elard Cooley is a leading figure in the horror podiofiction arena and it's where I came across his novella, Tattoo. In Tattoo we meet Nigel who introduces Jackson into the hidden world of tattooing. This chilling story is well written and researched with very believable characters. I strongly recommend Tattoo!

Tattoo is scary because it's believable. Very believable. Paul Cooley did his homework, wove an enticing story that grabs your interest and holds it to the end. And speaking of the end, the story stands alone but the stage is set for Paul to develop some of these characters even more in future stories. What's great about that is these characters are interesting enough that I want to hear more about them. I highly recommend Tattoo!

This story was masterfully done! The characters and plot had me hooked, right up to the end. As someone with several tats, I also loved the way Cooley nailed the art of tattooing (especially the pain). I couldn't put this one down.

being a man with many tattoos, this thing really messed with my head. knowing tattoos and knowing what one goes through as the body is used as a canvas, Cooley has gotten this story right. after reading it, I had to keep one eye open for a few nights.

I too have been inked in several places which hurt enough by themselves, but after reading this well crafted creepiness……shudder…kinda makes me rethink my desire to get more. I loved the podcast and can't wait to read the story. The Fiend Master does an amazing job of crafting a story with all sorts of *fun* twists & turns that really @*^#$ with your mind and keeps the suspense high.

Buy it! Or the Grubby Man will change stories.

I found Tattoo to be a very chilling tale. As I am one of the "Inked" community I found this story quite unsettling a times as should be in this type of novella. There were times during the story I cringed, squirmed, had my jaw drop and parts of my nether regions pull up inside me so far I'm not sure I will see them again. Paul Cooley is a master at spinning a great horror tale!

Like the ink on the body this story really gets under your skin, and the ink on the page can be as dark as that on the body, or in the mind. Too good a read to pass up.
