The host pulls me forward, raising my arm up in introduction. “Ladies and gentlemen, the last competitor from Sector 12 . . . please welcome Kadin O’Mallon!” The room echoes with applause and my image flashes on the giant screens. I cannot help but gasp as I look at myself as I am being taped. The gold tunic on me makes my whole body seem to glitter and flow like molten steel, and the dark makeup around my green eyes give them a beauty which is savage--yes, savage, Petr was right to describe me that way. I look fiercer than I feel, and I throw my head back as the clapping washes over me and finally dies down.

“You look quite remarkable, but also somewhat delicate,” the host says, looking pointedly at my lean arms. “Are you as--” and here he raises an eyebrow “--as capable as your fellow Sector 12 competitor says you are?”

“Well, we’re all looking forward to that, I’m sure.” The host walks behind me to my other side. “I noticed you talking with the handsome young man from Sector 4. Is there anyone here you might have an eye on?” He is talking about Alejo, the boy of fifteen who should not be here. As the crowd oohs and aahs I feel ill.

Silent with contempt, I shake my head no. I cannot even force a smile now.

The host beams at me. His question was a success even though my answer was not, and he is satisfied.

“And why would you make the best victor for the prince to take as his escort?”

The crowd waits for my answer with their perfect hair and fashionable clothes and horrible mood of celebration, the host holding the microphone to my face as though I am a monkey to be ordered to perform. At that moment I am disgusted, so disgusted that I tell the truth.

“I am an illegal sex worker,” I say, my words dripping with anger, “so I am used to being a whore.”
