He put both hands on the arms of her chair and leaned forward, looming over her, and Daisy’s heart beat faster; even when he was mad at her, he was so sexy. “The truth is, Miss Tucker, you don’t seem to take your job seriously, and now I’m paying for it.”

Daisy frowned, concerned for the first time. He wasn’t going to fire her, was he? If she lost her job, she’d have to give up her weekly mani-pedi and massage, her boutique shopping, maybe even her smartphone. She might have to move back home with her parents. He regarded her for long moments before releasing her chair and standing up. “Your work conduct, Miss Tucker, has been frivolous, disrespectful, and irresponsible.” Daisy went pale to hear herself described so harshly, and tears threatened again. “Do you dispute my assessment?”

She couldn’t help it this time; one fat tear spilled out of each eye and rolled down her cheeks. “No, sir.”

“The remedy, then—the key to your continued employment here—is for you to become industrious, respectful, and obedient. Would you agree?”

What else could she say? “Yes, sir.”

“The question, then, Miss Tucker, is what you are willing to do to reform your behavior.”
