The story follows two men.
Joe, a young man filled with teenage angst and his grandfather in the Somme in 1914.
It traces the twists of fate that bring them together.
His grandfather enlists in the British army at the hiring fairs in Northern Ireland.

He’s burdened with a guilt that he’s let this stranger down.
Caught in a violent storm he hurtles through the French countryside. His emotional turmoil, the reckless speed, and the forces of nature combine to thrust him back in time, into his grandfather’s path.
Trapped in the ravages of the Somme he bonds with his grandfather.
There he stumbles on Clarisse, the woman from his dreams. They know they are meant for each other. They spend a few passionate days together in Paris. He recklessly vows to stay with her forever.
Destiny reveals its plans. He has to leave. She pleads with him and he vows to return.
He saves his grandfather from a firing squad. As he races to get back to his love, he is thrown back to the present.
Heartbroken, he searches for a catalyst that will propel him into her arms again, but to no avail.
Joe concedes; his cause is lost.
Yet Clarisse waits at the Gare D’Orsay, the train station, where they parted.
The significance of an anniversary spurs Joe to return to the station, but it is now the Musee D’Orsay.
Under the gaze of the great clock they are about to surrender when the forces of nature intervene and throw them together again.

The author is a friend of mine since early school days and was alawys good at his essays. Therefore I expected a decent read when I started his book, what I found was something much more - an inventive, history telling, can't wait to get to the end, page turning rollercoaster through the fields of France and the last ninety years with an imaginative intermingle of past and present.

This book is a fantastic read it is so hard to put it down as you just have to find out what is going to happen to joe & his grandfather.I will be recommending it to all my friends.

Just finished reading this book. I happen to know the author - a bit of a dark horse - as I never realised that he had such a great talent as a writer. I read the book over a week-end - literally found it hard to put it down. An amazing story as it twists and turns its way and keeps you wide awake anxious to see where it is all leading to. I thoroughly recommend it. Simply a brilliant read.
