It is essential that children's books are grammatically correct — how do we teach them otherwise? The plot is fine, the construction poor.

Would have been improved by better grammar, and by a greater knowledge of bats' feeding habits and preferences. In other words, making it somewhat educational would have been given the tiny tale greater merit.
