Extended description

A bizarre murder mystery featuring the world's first "soft-boiled" detective, Shelf Barker. Barker is a UK driving instructor whose ex-wife--one of many--drags him kicking and screaming into the detective business, if only so he can help her clear him of two murders. They follow clues involving Mafia dons, Polish immigrants and gormless former students to the surprising conclusion.

Funerals in Brooklyn and mayhem in East Anglia that lead up to the solution feature a cast of characters including an auto-didact multilingual administrative assistant, a georgeous Italian woman who can't cook for beans, and a number of Mafiosi that make mincemeat of Analyze This for laughs. African students of dubious intent, TV chef wannabes who run over things in their spare time, and an ex-SAS officer--we think--muck up the works a little more and create more than one full-out belly laugh. A fun read, and completely irreverent, to boot.
