Tyler Watts is on the run, having found opportunity for escape from the miserable depths of Coldbath Fields prison in London during a Fenian jailbreak ploy. Wasting no time he flees the city and happens upon an opportunity to lay low in a remote English village on his way to Plymouth, where he would cross the Atlantic to a new life in the Dominion of Canada or the newly-formed United States of America. He stays as a lodger in a quaint house run by a most curious hostess. Struck by her wit and beauty he finds himself spying upon her to fill his otherwise uneventful days, until the ghost that haunts her makes itself ruefully known to him.
