About Devyn Dawson

I'll tell you a little about myself (yawn). I'm Devyn and I write paranormal YA books about the characters who live in my head. I love reading paranormal books and love hearing about new authors. I prefer young adult books, but will read grown-up books on occasion. I was always considered the ‘eccentric girl’ the one with the big imagination and colorful stories. I'm from Oklahoma City, a place I'll always call home. Right now, I live in the lush green and humid climate of New Bern, North Carolina. I was Goth before Goth was a style, I wanted to be Star from The Lost Boys and knew Keifer would one day find me and we'd fall madly in love.

The Light Tamer has been on my TBR for quite a while. I found the premise to be interesting and I was looking forward to reading a book with, what to my experience is, a unique paranormal premise.

The idea behind the light tamers in this book is great and new. It’s not often a paranormal book isn’t about an exhausted type of “creature.” But I did feel that there was also some strange things to it. The writing in this book wasn’t the best I’ve read before. I think that lead to some of my disappointment.

Dawson has great promise with this book, but there are aspects that could have used some work. To just touch briefly on that, I felt mainly like all of the characters didn’t react realistically to much of the reveals of the book. There was often a moment of questioning, but then it was explained away with a vague “we believe it could be….” explanation and everything’s back to normal again. Also, the conflicts that arise are almost too easily resolved. This is most apparent at the main event of the book.

Some of the dialogue wasn’t to my liking either. Jessie sounds enough like a fifteen year old, but Caleb who’s not much older than her, sounds too mature for his age. The way they deal with issues also makes many characters feel older than they are and the responsibilities given to them so easily by adults makes it seem like they’re older teens.

It wasn’t all iffy though. I wanted to keep reading and to find out more about light tamers and what was all going on. The book is very fast paced, if not a little short even at roughly 60K words, and this helps more things along nicely. I really liked Amber’s character, though she was a little upstaged by Jessie and Caleb’s insta-love relationship (explainable insta-love but still slightly too fast).

I did enjoy this book, even if it wasn’t all that I think it could have been if it were fleshed out more and given time to blossom in various ways. I grabbed a copy of book 2 and plan on reading it soon to continue in this trilogy.

I would give this book somewhere around 3 stars, maybe a little more. The story had an interesting and very original concept. A different kind of plot with some interesting twist. Nice love story with some sexiness wrapped up in it. I think the characters are my favorite part of the book. They are all teenagers dealing with their own personal tragedies & yet they are strong & resilient (more so than most adult book characters). I liked the heroine. She seems to be a genuine and strong person with a good sense of humor. I adore Caleb (the love interest). He seems strong, devoted, driven & quite sexy. I loved his adoration for our heroine! Then there is the quirky bff. Hilarious, eccentric, brave, witty and strong. The supporting cast were all interesting & enjoyable. The interaction with all the characters was very believable & fun. I think my only complaint is that the story itself seemed a little raw & jumbled. I felt like the editor should have put some more time into the story. There was some confusion in development at times, where I just got lost with how certain events & understandings of said events even came about. There would be points where I had to back up & try to reread sections to see if I missed some explanation or development that lead to the situation I was reading. That said, I feel like there is some definite potential here. As a new writer with the right editor this series could really shine. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
