Maine State Police Detective Reed Sanderson returns from medical leave only to find his department reeling from a series of mysterious murders cleverly disguised as accidental deaths. Reed is chosen to oversee a five-man homicide task force to investigate these bizarre deaths but inexorably the death count rises as the group is befuddled by a seeming lack of motive in each case. What makes Reed's job more difficult, and much more agonizing, is the awareness that the man who killed his son a year earlier, Joseph "Snake" Mercier, has returned to Maine to champion a white supremacist group and exact revenge on Reed and his partner, Jake Lewis, for shooting his brother in a raid on their compound. The mysterious deaths are the brainchild of three wealthy, bored, retirees, who are led by Vince Fiorillo, a former defense lawyer for crime boss Sammy Montese. Reed later discovers an enigmatic pattern to the murders which does not allow the task force to either solve the crimes, nor predict who or where will be next, but it does demonstrate that the murders are not mysterious accidents, but pre-planned events. When one of the Murder Club members is shot during the commission of a murder, Reed investigates and finds that the three of them are "inseparable" and orders the other two to be placed under surveillance. After Jake Lewis kills another of them at a crime scene the readers are then enlightened by "the last man standing", Vince Fiorillo, whose reflections explain that not only was there a motive, but that there was indeed a method to his madness. The other two die never knowing that they were really unsuspecting pawns in his scheme to kill Sammy Montese's only daughter, thus revenging the earlier death of his wife at the hands of the crime boss. Reed has no time to bask in the satisfaction of solving these murders as his son is kidnapped by "Snake" and is scheduled to be killed in the bombing of a mosque on April 20th, a significant date to the Aryan Brotherhood as it was Hitler's birthday. An informant, who had both been taken advantage of and later shot at by "Snake," shows Reed where Snake is living and the State Police surround his home. In the attack, Reed's son saves his father's life and Snake is captured. As Reed prepares to take him in, the informant pulls out a weapon and kills Snake. Blood Sport concludes with Reed receiving an anonymous letter from Vince Fiorillo, who congratulates him on being a worthy adversary and hoping that with the death of "Snake" Mercier, Reed is able to find peace. While this certainly could be a lead-in to a future novel, with Vince as the antagonist, it nevertheless provides a satisfying conclusion to Blood Sport.
