Maine State Police Detective Reed Sanderson returns from medical leave only to find his department reeling from a series of mysterious murders cleverly disguised as accidental deaths. Reed is chosen to oversee a five-man homicide task force to investigate these bizarre deaths but inexorably the death count rises as the group is befuddled by a seeming lack of motive in each case. What makes Reed's job more difficult, and much more agonizing, is the awareness that the man who killed his son a year earlier, Joseph "Snake" Mercier, has returned to Maine to champion a white supremacist group and exact revenge on Reed and his partner, Jake Lewis, for shooting his brother in a raid on their compound. The mysterious deaths are the brainchild of three wealthy, bored, retirees, who are led by Vince Fiorillo, a former defense lawyer for crime boss Sammy Montese.
