This began several years ago, when Andrea started having nightmares. Not that she'd never had nightmares before, mind you - but she'd never had them one on top of another, ceaselessly, all night and every night for days and sometimes weeks on end. It recurred the next year, and the year after that.

It happened regularly enough that she began to refer to the fall as Nightmare Season.

Then at the beginning of Summer 2011 Google opened the invite-only beta of Google+. Andrea was invited, joined (as Bliss Morgan), and managed to meet some really great people, and witness them doing some interesting things. In September, with Nightmare Season looming, she decided to (and posted that she would) write a piece of short horror fiction every day in October, in the hopes that getting the demons out of my head and onto a page or screen where she could see them would help alleviate Nightmare Season somewhat. People thought this was a fantastic idea.

People wanted to join in.

She welcomed anybody who wanted to participate in any capacity, and set it up that she would post an inspirational image each morning, and anybody so inclined had all day to write something and post it. She was the only one that she felt had to post something every day. She ran it from October 1 to October 31. She had folks who wanted to write, some who just wanted to read and comment, and several who wanted to provide photography or other images.

From that project, she ended up with many short fictions, which she pared down to these fine twenty. She hopes that you enjoy the Nightmares.

An enjoyable read with some really entertaining stories. Absolutely worth checking out, especially if you like your horror a tad on the lighter side. It could probably benefit from one more thorough edit, but overall it was quite well done. I look forward to more.

Nightmare Fuel is an short fiction (flash fiction if you want to get specific) anthology. As the name suggests these speculative fiction shorts are aimed at creeping you out or making you shudder.

Flash fiction anthologies can be a little frustrating to read. Sometimes you're just getting into a story and already it's done. There's little time for building characters of any depth.

But there are certain rewards too. The variety of settings and ideas on display here is impressive and there was no sign of repetition. It's a literal parade of the imagination. It's also easy to dip in and out of the book. You don't have to commit to more than 15 or so minutes of reading if you don't want to.

There were a couple of stories where the sting in the tail didn't quite seem to come off. Or maybe I misunderstood the ambiguity, but the majority of these short stories stand up on their own merits.

Some of the stories are funny, others disturbing, but none of them resort purely to shock for their nightmarish qualities. They play on our irrational fears but frequently in a cerebral way.

There are elements of fairly straightforward horror (werewolves, OMG, RUN!) and elements of a more Lovecraftian creepy atmosphere but without the excessive verbiage.

That these tales were actually used to stave off nightmares is itself a little creepy.

Horror is not my go to genre so while I enjoyed these, if you're a big horror fan, you'll probably like them even more, but if you're prone to nightmares, read 'em over breakfast.
