About Debbie McGowan

I'm a teacher / lecturer in the social sciences, which brings its own complexities to my work, both as an educator and an author.

I live in Lancashire, UK, with Nigel (husband), my two daughters and two border collies. One day, I will move to Watergate Bay, in Cornwall.

In 2011, I set up Beaten Track Publishing, predominantly to jumpstart my own writing career, but also to help other authors publish their work. I'm a socialist and that's how I do business.

I've written several novels, including Champagne, And The Walls Came Tumbling Down, No Dice and the Hiding Behind The Couch series, which is ongoing.

I don't like to stick to one genre, but my novels tend to fall within the remit of contemporary fiction, if anything. That said, they all have in common an attempt to provide insights into the characters' minds and their own unique perceptions. I am particularly outspoken when it comes to identity politics, and this underpins most of what I write.

I also have a gamut of poetry that probably ought not to ever see the light of day, but some of it can be read on my website (debbiemcgowan.co.uk).

For all of this, I don't read or write anywhere near as much as I should.
