Young Cal Asher, Lieutenant (Junior Grade), USN, joined the U.S. Navy with the goal to become a jet pilot, only to get stuck in a prop squadron. In the late '60s, the air war in Viet Nam escalated enough that there was a shortage of pilots to man the attack squadrons. So a hand full of prop jockeys and helicopter pilots were sent to NAS (Naval Air Station) Cecil Field to make a transition to jet aircraft. Shortly after starting his transition training, Cal meets Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Jack Watson and they become fast friends. They complete their training together and deploy to the Viet Nam Theater together. While Jack and Cal find their preparatory training plenty arduous enough, they find the real thing even more so as they endure the trauma of combat together. Low altitude bombing, dodging flak, outmaneuvering surface to air missiles and coping with bad weather while on bombing missions become old hat to Jack and Cal while their friends in fighter squadrons have dog fights with .. The Search and Rescue teams tended to be really busy at times. Bringing battle damaged aircraft back to land on board ship tends to be tedious, especially on night missions, and sometimes impossible. So the pilots many times got more excitement than they wanted. And the ones with the hardest job of all were probably the women waiting at home for their men to return.
