Roger McCrory is a simple man. He likes his smokes, his booze and his women. But when the old man known only as Odin returns to remind him of his oath, it seems as though his simple life will soon end. Three years free of the machine for every nine inside the machine. Wrapped in wires and conduits, Roger considers it a miserable existence, but he'll die if he doesn't go back. Or will he?
Four hundred years ago, Roger McCrory made a solemn oath to the protectors of mankind, the Aesir. They man the machines that watch over humanity, ensuring their continued survival.
But Roger likes his life outside and he's had enough. He would rather smoke and drink himself to an early grave with a beautiful woman next to him than go back.
When Odin comes to collect him, Roger has to make a choice. Go back to the machine or die without its support. That is, at least, until Loki arrives with a better offer.
Does he dare trust that Loki will help him and risk his own death? Or go back with Odin and suffer alone and isolated, a fate, to him, worse than death?
