They must fight their way across many kilometers of undeveloped alien wilderness. Upriver on primitive steam boats . . . uncooperative porters . . . attacked by hordes of hungry outlaws . . . hunted by predators . . . wading through marshy swampland . . . living off the land . . . battered by frequent storms . . .

They must find the bomb before its electromagnetic bottle generators give out, forcing contact between the antimatter core and ordinary matter of the universe, releasing more energy than the largest hydrogen fusion bomb.

Yutaro and Vardi must defeat the treachery of the superiors who don't want to risk the spread of their knowledge, and can use their brain implants as weapons.

But the greatest obstacles lie within themselves: their personal traumas, their hidden agendas, their ignorance of each other's culture.

And the languages they speak.

Yutaro and Vardi each speak the ancient linqua fraca of the humans of the galaxy: Cyrillish. A mixture of English and Russian with words from other major European languages.

Yutaro's superiors speak an extreme form of Bureaucratese. The responsibility for any negative outcome never falls on them.

Lavita speaks the language of the world. One where the only part of speech is the verb. Just add "ing" to every word to make it a gerund! Everyone describes the world as they know and experience it. Lavita names one kind of flower a "dream" flower because they're beautiful as a dream.

Lying is worse than murder.

For they fear returning to their past of rampant murder, rape and cannibalism.

Yutaro and Vardi are not prepared the changes learning to speak the native language brings to them.

The aliens set up a viable economic system based on wealth free for the taking for everybody who contributes their own labor and skills. Without taxes, exploitation or coercion.

One when anybody can be a king -- if you can find people to obey you.

Where nobody is a slave.

One human beings desperately need to learn from.
