As the first tournament champion to ever win his first day out as a knight, Reyne Garant can be skilled at getting his way, but the one dream he had his whole life turns out to be false. He doesn’t have much time to lament the loss of it because in the days following the tournament he comes to understand that his duty to his sister comes first. The kingdom has changed hands in the midst of a feudal war and a new evil king has taken control of Garanthia, forcing them to run for their lives.
Although Reyne has made his own plans for their escape, a trusted family friend turns traitor and attempts to kidnap the brother and sister. They are told this is meant to save their lives, and in fact, must accept the help of their sworn enemy to escape Garanthia. Gwenalyn is thrilled at the prospects she sees opening up for her in Donalea, but Reyne only feels powerless and begins to formulate other plans.

He must accept the existence of wizards, ghosts, witches, seers, and all kinds of new ideas. He must learn to accept that he has special powers that come from his bloodline.
Both Reyne and Gwenalyn must also accept that everything they had been told about their lives was a lie. They were not merely adopted into the Garant family, as they had thought. They had been kidnapped by the Garants, taken from the arms of their Donlean parents. Gwenalyn takes the news in stride, but Reyne is forced to believe that he is a blood heir to the Donalean throne and that he has no choice but to face his destiny.
That destiny is something Reyne cannot accept, even as the members of his family begin to slip from his fingers. As Gwenalyn takes control of her life, Reyne begins to take control of his. He begins to understand from others how he wants to live his life. He begins to realize how to make his dreams come true.
He also begins to have visions that his destiny is real and that he will have to meet it someday. But first, he must save Gwenalyn, this time, from herself.
