They discover that the baby deer was born with clubbed hooves and will need an operation if he’s ever going to run and play with the other deer.

Nine-year old Julia falls asleep while visiting her nana. In her dream, she and Nana are walking in the woods and they stumble upon a small deer that has the ability to talk. He introduces himself as Baby Deer, but he is very sad. The other deer shun him because he has clubbed hooves and can’t run and play.
Baby Deer takes Julia to Deer Village and introduces her to his parents, Mama and Papa Deer.
When Julia goes back to Nana and Pawpaw’s house, she begs Nana to call a veterinarian to see if Baby Deer’s clubbed hooves can be fixed. The doctor agrees to try an operation.
Pawpaw fixes the Deer family a home in the old barn. After the operation, Baby Deer has to wear cast on his front hooves. Julia and Nana take him to the barn and they keep watch over him through the night. He develops a high fever, he’s congested, and he can’t breathe. It seems that he won’t live. Nana uses old home remedies to nurse him back to health. Baby Deer survives.

Christmas Day, Julia’s family has a barn Christmas, and the Deer family are the guest of honor. Baby Deer loves people world and never wants to leave. However, Mama and Papa Deer tell him that he has to return to the deer world when he is able to walk and run.
The cast are removed. Baby Deer’s hooves are perfect! He is almost a year old, and his parents call him Boy Deer. Boy Deer becomes restless and heads for the woods, where he finds a doe. Several weeks pass. Julia is brokenhearted. Just as she gives up hope, Boy Deer comes for a visit and introduces himself as Man Deer. He also introduces his mate. Julia falls in love with the beautiful animal and names her Dora Doe.
Julia grieves through the long winter months. When spring arrives, she goes into the woods in hopes of finding another baby deer. Before she reaches the wooded area, she feels the ground shaking. At first, she thinks it’s an earthquake—until she hears a familiar voice calling her name. She stands in awe as two grown deer run toward her. Man Deer is now Papa Deer, and he and Dora Doe have twin fawns, a buck and a doe.
Julia awakes and her first instinct is to run out of the house in search of the Deer family. Then she realizes it was only a dream. She slowly makes her way into the kitchen and looks out the window. Two fawns are wandering around in the back yard.
She quietly opens the back door. The two fawns walk over to her and smell her hands. She slowly raises her hands up and begins to stroke their ears. The fawns aren’t speaking with their tongues, but their dark brown eyes are speaking volumes. Julia heads for the old barn, and the fawns follow.
Julia looks around the barn, picturing where she will hang Christmas decorations. In her heart, she knows she and her family will have a barn Christmas with the deer—just like in her dream.
