a poor farmer's son plus an ancient wampum belt equals the world's first astronaut. pitus peston, the second son of a farmer seems to have little going for him but serfdom under his elder brother. he is, however, self taught in nine languages and his destined mediocrity changes in 1805 when he trades a knife for a wampum sash depicting an otherworldly image. pitus leaves home to follow the quest to find the gods of oman, trans-galactic travelers exiled to earth centuries before. peston follows a string of clues that leads him to a derelict space craft atop a butte in the western desert. from a transliteration of the old testament in the alien language and greek, left behind by one of the aliens, peston learns omanee, the alien tongue, as language number ten. he uses this rosetta stone as a key to learn the advanced science of the aliens, and after repairing the ship, becomes the world's first astronaut. The whole galaxy is now up for grabs, and pitus is eager to take it.
