Short description

Fort McCain, New Mexico at the turn of the 20th C. and an investigation into the death of an Indian. Flashback forty years to the murder of a soldier at Ft McCain. Two men on the run join a gang of renegades but this is too much for them and instead they help the victims of the gang. After a fight, the two take off with two Mexican beauties with the law and the renegades firmly on their trail.

The opening scene finds us in the guardhouse of Ft McCain, New Mexico at the turn of the 20th century. Captain Mellow arrives to investigate a veteran army scout Otis Grey, who is accused of murdering an Indian he was sent to round up and take to the reservation. Captain Mellow interviews Otis and the story flashes back 40 years to 1867.
Eighteen-year-old, half-breed Kiowa, Billy Songboy who has grown up at Ft. McCain is behind bars in the stockade for habitual drunkenness and violence. A black soldier, Sergeant Jubal Quinn (on detachment from Colonel Grierson’s 10th cavalry – the buffalo soldiers) joins him, in trouble for shooting a white soldier during a bar room fight. Reckoning Jubal is destined for the gallows; they break out with help of Billy’s mother, Shadow Woman and make their getaway across the Mexican border.

Billy and Quinn run into a bunch of renegades led by psychopathic killer Claude Valentine and are forced to join them. They reluctantly become involved in a sharp fight with Otis’s cavalry detachment, but manage to get away with the gang. They head back across the border to Arizona. Otis orders the troopers to return to Fort McCain because he has no jurisdiction in Mexico then follows the renegades accompanied only by Petorio, his Apache scout. Otis and Petorio trail the bandits and are joined by Zeb Turner, a mountain man who has been wounded by the gang.
Jubal and Billy are involved in a violent bank robbery in Tuscan and escape back to Mexico with the bandits.
So the scene returns to revolution-torn Sonora where the Comancheros plan to rob a wealthy hacienda, with murder and rape also on their minds. But Billy and Jubal sneak off to warn the owners after killing one of the gang members. Unfortunately the attack comes too soon, but Jubal and Billy escape (after a fierce fight) with Teresita and Alameda, the two beautiful daughters of the family, although the hacienda is destroyed. A third girl is Pepita who is captured by the bandits. Now Billy and Jubal have both Otis and the outlaws after them.
They flee north only to run into a troop of Maximillian’s legionnaires and a battle ensues. Once again Billy and Jubal slip through the noose with the two Mexican beauties.
In the confusion and slaughter the outlaws are decimated and Otis captures Claude Valentine, returning him to Tucson for trial. Otis and his comrades rescue Pepita, who accompanies them on the chase. In time she and Otis fall in love.
Meanwhile Jubal and Billy have agreed to take Teresita and Alameda to their father who is driving a herd of longhorns to Flagstaff. The girls’ father persuades the two fugitives to escort his daughters to their aunt, Doña Frescura who owns an estate on the northern shore of San Francisco Bay until he has rebuilt their home. In return he believes he can delay Otis’s party.
The chase continues with plenty of frenetic adventures. The fugitives are just one jump ahead of the Otis, Petorio, Zeb Turner and Pepita. There is action in Tucson, the Grand Canyon, down the Colorado River and on to San Francisco where Otis catches up with Jubal and Billy for their final showdown. Billy shoots Otis, severely wounding him and he, Jubal, Teresita and Alameda vanish into the Barbary Coast.
Pepita, Petorio and Zeb take Otis to Doña Frescura’s estate and she tends to Otis’s wounds. She is a woman of influence and arranges for Jubal and Billy to be tracked down and shanghaied on a Yankee whaler bound for the Southern Ocean. Otis recovers and is forced to abandon the chase now the fugitives are gone.
The story returns to 1907 where Otis tells of what has occurred to the characters afterwards and the mystery of the dead Indian is finally revealed.
