World War II had now commenced in the Pacific with a violence not previously experienced.

"With the passengers on board we slipped just as darkness fell on the night of 17th January, 1942. It was my intention to be well out into the Straits before the morning as Singapore Harbour had been bombed on a number of occasions while we were berthed, each time in the morning. Fortunately we had escaped any damage from the bombings."

His attempt to escape the Japanese by navigating the "Pacific Trader" south out of Singapore Harbour towards the Lombok Straits was fraught with danger which quickly became a reality when a Japanese submarine blew the boat apart leaving only two survivors who made it ashore on the Sumatra Coast. "Seng, we're on Sumatra just at the entrance of the Malacca Straits and south of Singapore Harbour, further south down the coast is Palembang. With the Japanese now closing in, I'm not sure what our next move should be."

Being thrown together by circumstances with two other survivors from another torpedoed boat, an Australian Army Nursing Sister and a young Malaysian woman fleeing the Japanese, and using radio equipment salvaged from a coastal boat wreck, they inadvertently became coast watchers for the remainder of the war.

"This is Port Moresby, Roger that. We're not in a position to help you at present but you could help us with appropriate transmissions on 4 point 5, 7 or 27. Will keep a 24 hour listening watch. Over."

Looking at Cait I had commented. "It seems we're too important here than to be rescued."

Their skills and abilities were to be tested to the limit in evading Japanese patrols and Japanese activities attempting to close down their coast watching activities.

Love was to blossom in this dangerous environment and was to later grow into a deep commitment for each of the survivors. A saga of survival, love and commitment in the bleak days of World War II and the early post war years.
