The story behind the story: I was originally commissioned to write Books 1 and 4 of a four book science-fiction mystery series called "The A.I. Gang" I loved the concept, loved the characters I built, and had a blast writing Book 1.

I was well into Book 4 when I got a call from the editors telling me that the other writer - who was doing Books 3 and 4 (yeh, it was as crazy as it sounds) was so late on Book 2 that they wanted me to step in and write Book 3. Which I was happy to do, because I loved, loved, loved these characters.

The books did all right, but didn't set the world on fire. That's the way it goes. But I didn't want to let go of them. So after they had gone out of print, I spent almost two years working to get the rights to my three titles back. Once I did, I overhauled them from top to bottom, writing around Book 2 (which, to be honest, did nothing major to advance the plot) and moving all the action to a much more isolated situation, which I thought was essential .. These six kids - Roger, Rachel, Hap, Trip, Ray, and Wendy - are some of my favorite characters ever, and I loved working with what Tamora Pierce calls a "group hero."

Though not among the most successful of my books, over the years I've found that they have a dedicated following. It seems that the readers who did find them tended to really love them. With that in mind, I am delighted to be making them available once more in ebook form.
