When you’re a 12-year-old city slicker whose hobbies are chasing the ice-cream truck, developing movie-star crushes and anticipating your first kiss, the last place you want to spend your summer vacation is with your parents in a rustic cabin in the New Hampshire wilderness. Journey back to 1962, when I, along with my city friend, Janet, learned all about nature...and country boys. More

About Sally Breslin

I was born and raised in New Hampshire, where I still reside, so I’m a true New Englander through and through.

I knew at a young age that writing was my passion. I started writing poetry when I was only 8. During summer vacations from school, I’d sit on the front steps of my tenement building and write books. Each day, the other kids in the neighborhood would gather and I’d read the next installment to them. I also started keeping a journal when I was 12, and have continued to do so every day since. My journals are like having my own time machine. I can tell you what I ate for breakfast back on Nov. 2, 1963!

For over 20 years, I worked as a newspaper correspondent and photographer for the Hooksett Banner. Since 1984, I have been interpreting dreams in my weekly newspaper column, "Dreams...with Sally Breslin," and since 1994, have been writing a weekly humor column, "My Life," both of which are published in four New England Newspapers. In 1996, I was named the New Hampshire Press Association’s columnist of the year. I also have taught humor-writing classes for Concord Community Education.

My stories have been published in the bestsellers, A SECOND CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE WOMAN'S SOUL, CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL AT CHRISTMAS, and BELLY LAUGHS AND BABIES.

Although I was raised as a devout city slicker, I currently live way out in the country with my husband and two Rottweilers, who are my faithful hiking companions. I love the country – but I can do without the mosquitoes and ticks!

This is a cute "coming of age" in the early 60's. Well written and funny!

Good stuff from a terrific author. This is a coming of age story about the summer adventures of a pre-teen girl, but it's a good story for anyone who recalls growing up in the sixties, girl or boy. There are some fine characterizations and a story that just skips along with some very funny images. A very readable story that can be enjoyed over and over again.

I truly loved this book. It took me back to my time as a pre- teen, discovering boys....discovering myself. I remembered the summer adventures my best friend and I had. I laughed at things I had forgotten. The horror of dressing up and having to wear a rubber girdle in the summer heat. My first bra, my first boyfriend , testing and trusting my instincts. I cried too...tears of sadness and shock. Sally captures those days with a clarity I have not seen before. This was a great read, an ISLAND OF WARMTH in these troubling times. I plan to read it again.

This book made me feel like I was there with the author, her friends and family enjoying every adventure with them, having fun, growing up and meeting new people.

The book is funny, entertaining and hard to "put down".

The story will lift your spirts, make you laugh and want to go to a more simple time. What a super book!

This book will surely amuse every reader. I found myself laughing out loud and remembering my summer days as a child as well. It's a "feel good" book. I recommend to anyone who needs some reading fun and go down their own childhood lane.
