Extended description

In this short story set in the near future, Sean Linehan, an international sports executive, travels to Padania, which has recently broken away from Italy to form an independent state, and is now desperate to gain acceptance by joining the world football community. Linehan’s job is ostensibly just to look into its application and report back to his boss. As usual, though, Linehan has his own agenda: girls, art and money. Once again, he finds a ready supply, but how will he react when Padania shows him some of its dark secrets, which he would rather not have learned?
The short story is accompanied by the first chapter of Bryan Murphy’s forthcoming novella of ideas, "Goodbye, Padania".

A good, short read. It makes me want to know more about Linehan (will he really change?) and more about "Padania".
I warmly recommend it to lovers of Italy and speculative fiction.

Linehan's Trip is a short story by Bryan Murphy. It's set in the year 2019, and tells the short tale of a man traveling to Padania to meet with FIFA officials. Being that it's a short story, I don't want to give away too much, because this short story is worth the read, especially if you are a fan of football.

The main character is well fleshed out for being such a short story, which shows extreme talent on the author's part. He's not the best guy, a guy concerned about women and money, but from the first page you definitely feel like you know him.

The thing that threw me off on a personal note, was that the story was told in present tense, which I've always had a bit of trouble with. However, that's a personal preference and should, in no way, dissuade you from downloading this story.

My only critique was that being someone separate from sport and the workings of that industry, a lot of the story went over my head. I think the author's expanded idea in his novella using these characters and this subject matter, will be wonderfully enjoyable.

Murphy definitely has a lot of talent and skill when it comes to writing, and that comes across in the short pages. If you download the book, you also get a preview chapter of his next novella, "Goodbye, Padania" where you can see an introduction to more characters and more of the world.

I'm giving this short story 4 out of 5 stars, and definitely looking forward to seeing that world expanded.

Picked this up and read it over dinner.
It was a nicely written short story that introduces the reader to Padania.
Half of the book is actually the first chapter (preview) of Murphy's full length novel, "Goodbye, Padania".

Linehan’s Trip by Bryan Murphy

Set in the future, Bryan Murphy’s short story, Linehan’s Trip is an experience in the seedy underbelly of sports, both professional international league and those smaller who wish to be a part of the main stream. Murphy’s short tale is a precursor to his novel Goodbye Padania. The story is both an eyewitness account of racism gone to the extreme, and a main character with enough power in the right places to make or break another’s dreams of international play utilizing his own judgment.

At the fringes of it all is a stark reality of governmental control and media manipulation. The plot is original and leaves readers wishing to grasp the illusive knowledge that resides just under the surface, but is not visible to those searching. The main character of the piece, Sean Linehan, comes off as a self-absorbed womanizer who orders women like one would order lunch. He is, in many respects, unlikeable; and being so, places the motivation of even his few well-meaning actions into question.

This is a story of use, and abuse in many ways, pulling in stereotypical behavior to exemplify the themes of over indulgence and corruption. My greatest hope is that Murphy puts forth energy that is more descriptive in the upcoming novel this tale is based on. The house he has created has good bones, I would like to see him breathe life into it and create a real home for his characters and his topics.
