Short description
For lovers of the dark and spooky, a collection of a half dozen of my most frightening short stories, starting with "There's Nothing Under the Bed" - my personal choice for my all time scariest. (My editors says it still gives her nightmares!)
First time this particular group has been gathered in single collection. Also included: a new introduction, and notes on the genesis of each story.
From the introduction:
"It's an odd thing, the way we seek out fear. I can remember a handful of stories that haunted me when I was young, a couple from the Frank Edwards' book Stranger than Science (what does it tell you that I still remember the author's name fifty years later?) and also Algernon Blackwood's supremely terrifying “The Wendigo.” It's almost as if we need to be terrified for some reason.
"In addition to being a writer, I'm a storyteller. By that, I don't mean telling stories on paper – I mean standing in front of an audience and performing. In that role I've learned something interesting. If you ask a group of kids if they want to hear a story, they'll go, “Yeah!” And if you then ask kids what kind of story they want to hear, invariably about ninety percent of them will yell, “A scary story!”
"It's strange when you think about it. None of us like being stuck in a truly scary situation – if a werewolf was coming through the front door most of us woul.. (Read more)

Definitely lives up to its name - these short stories are truly creepy! And a great, albeit brief, introduction to Coville's work, clearly, since I had not read any before and now plan to seek out plenty more (although I gather he doesn't always skew toward the scary).
I also want to add, just because, that this was my gateway drug to Smashwords. I had not heard of this site before an acquaintance - a Coville fan - mentioned him having stuff here. I think he was holding a sale perhaps? This was about 6 months ago now, and I only wish I hadn't sat on this book for so long after purchasing it at the time!
But in any case, I'm so glad I found Coville in this way. Thank you for the nightmares!
