Abigail Maduro, an island girl with little hope for the future, rescues Erich after he washes ashore on her remote Caribbean island and hides him in the basement of her house. Unbeknownst to them, an undercover German spy discovers Erich's presence on the island and blackmails him into committing sabotage and murder. When all hope is lost, Abigail turns to some of the island's more colorful residents, such as Queen Coziah, the legendary leader of the coal carriers, and Judge Neergaard, a kind and sympathetic Danish judge with some old scores to settle.
