Ryne Taylor was a sexy bad-ass Alpha set on establishing a new pack. Melody Greene was a journalism student researching his work as a photographer—or so she said. About Nicky Charles

Nicky Charles is an independent writer/publisher who became an author quite by accident. She always saw herself as a ‘reader not a writer’ and can thank—or blame, depending on the day—her friend/editor and fellow author, Jan Gordon, for the career she now finds herself immersed in. The tale goes something like this:

In January of 2009, Nicky penned a fanfiction for an old TV series, “Scarecrow and Mrs. King”, and soon became ‘hooked’ on story telling. She joined a fan-based group for the show and through there met Jan Gordon. It was an idle comment made by Jan during a review of Black Silk (Jan’s newly published book) that inspired Nicky to write her first original story. Over the course of the next two months, she hastily scribbled down a suspense driven romance entitled Forever In Time and presented it to the world in August of 2009. Soon after, she wrote The Mating, a paranormal romance and followed it up with The Keeping and The Finding. The three stories formed a loose paranormal trilogy called The Law of the Lycans. Nicky continues to expand the Lycan series and has a long list of possible plots waiting in the wings.

Nicky works full-time and writes in her off-hours, few though they may be! In the next few years she hopes to retire from her day job and concentrate more of her energy on her new passion of writing.

When she writes, Nicky sees the story unfolding in her head like a movie and tries to include enough detail so that readers can ‘see’ the story just as she does. The sights, sounds, smells and sensations of a scene are almost as important to her as the actual plot.

Creating main characters that are ‘real’ is also something she strives for. Nicky tries to make each character different, to give them an interesting back story, to make their actions and feelings logical and to hopefully make the reader actually care what happens to the people in the story.

Nicky lives in Canada and tries to stick to Canadian spelling and punctuation in her work, in support of her country. She is an avid supporter of animal shelters, nature conservancy, food banks and a variety of other charities. Currently she has two ‘inside’ cats and one official ‘outside’ cat though a number of strays seem to take up residence in her garden each year.

When not writing, Nicky enjoys reading – though she often bemoans that she seldom has time for it any more. Her favourite authors are Elizabeth Peters, S.C. Stephen and Cherise Sinclair. She also enjoys spending time out in nature, gardening, taking day trips and eating dark chocolate.

This was the second book I read by Nicky Charles and also here the roles are reliable and predictable. What I enjoy so far is that nearly every book has a real action part nearing the end, which really keeps you suspended and mising your sleep.

So as with the first: This is entertaining romace as I guess it was inteded to be.

A thank you to Nicky Charles for giving us this entertainment for free. Yepp that is great! A big thank you!

My My My, This was just as good as the Mating...Sometimes, you read one and then the second one is not as good but I think Nicky Charles has out done herself in this book. The action is riveting and compelling, I was drawn into the story and found myself turning the pages to match the excitement unfolding. Great writing.

This series continues to surprise me, Nicky Charles has done it again, she has written a very smart and captivating series that I can't seem to get enough of. I was so happy that this story included a look at Elise's and Kane's life and where they are in their relationship, although the story mostly consists of Ryne Taylor and Melody Green's journey.

I believe the Keeping is about destiny, Ryne and Melody were destined to be in each others life, even to the detriment of their friends or family. It was like everyone had to play a part for these two unaware protagonists to find each other and realize they were meant to be. People were inconvenienced and people died for the sake of Ryne's and Melody's destinies. Mel enters Ryne's life under false pretense mostly unbeknownst to her. For the good of all Lycan's Ryne is tasked with eliminating Melody from his life by any means necessary, but is finding it difficult to take control of his inner wolf and send her on her way. I really enjoyed their journey and had those, "are you freaking kidding me" moments, my emotions ran the gamut, from swoony moments to the heart wrenching moments.

Can't wait to continue seeing the paths these lovable and one really hateable Lycans, journey takes them.

Review by: Sadie S. Forsythe on Jan. 27, 2013 :
Charles has penned another zinger with The Keeping, sequel to The Mating. This one follows Zane's brother Ryne as he attempts to form his own pack in the wilds (or at least small town) of Canada and battle his dangerous attraction to Melody Greene, who inadvertently threatens everything he holds dear.

I enjoyed Ryne's internal power struggle with his inner wolf. [I know that sentence if a little redundant, but you know what I mean.] The wolf part of the human-wolf combination that makes a werewolf seems to have a more distinct influence on their people in this book than the first. He was of course dominant, arrogant, and dead sexy. It would be hard to complain about any of that. I did have a little trouble imagining him as a photographer. He didn't strike me as the artistic type, but oh well. Melody was spirited and showed enough back bone to make me like her, but not enough to become a bitch [pun intended]. Their virolent repartee was amusing and you couldn't help but root of them as a couple.

I liked the twist on Mr. Greyson as a likeable bad guy and the small reveal concerning the secretary at the end was subtle and well placed. It sent a shiver down my spine. I don't think we've seen the last of her yet. All-in-all I really enjoyed The Keeping and am working on Bonded as I write this. Nicky Charles is quickly becoming one of my new favourites. Highly recommend picking them up.

Having read The Mating, I wasn't sure about a book that featured Ryne as a major character but Nicky successfully pulled it off. Certainly, Ryne is rough around the edges, obnoxious and full of attitude but I can say, with all honesty, that Nicky Charles put just the right amount of seasoning in how she has molded and crafted Ryne --and Mel. Excellent dose of suspense and wow on the spice. Nicky knows how to spice up a story without going overboard! Excellent job overall!

WoW! First, I loved The Mating. I didn't want it to end. Then I was very pleasantly surprised to find that I enjoyed this sequel even more! It was really GREAT!

Sadly, as I did with the 1st book, I became addicted & sacrificed way too much sleep to find out what would happen next! There should be warnings about the addictive qualities of this author's books. I fear I may suffer withdrawal when I finish this series!

Thankfully, The Keeping had some of my favorite characters from the 1st book. I loved that. I get so attached when I read a great book that I don't want to let go of the characters & the world! I know it's not quite the same as getting to live each character's journey, but still, it's like getting to visit with old friends or family.

In this book, you get to know (& love) the strong, funny & sexy Ryne. He's really great & easy to love. OK, I know the whole Alpha male/ domineering personality isn't for everyone. But I so enjoy them in my reading & they are totally appropriate for werewolf books!

I also grew to love Melody. She was great with the comebacks, sweet, intelligent, tough and strong although feminine, petite & somewhat naive.

The secondary characters were really great, too. I loved this small town & the whole feel of this book. I want to live in a place like that! The characters felt real to me. The dialog was great, often very witty & fun.

The action/suspense got pretty intense. Man, Nicky Charles can write really EVIL & greedy bad guys. They were so powerful & intelligent. A scary combination!

The story line became quite complex. I loved the intricacies of the plot. I'd think I knew where the story would lead & then surprises would come about. I was really impressed!

Although, I didn't want this book to end, I am thrilled that there is another book to continue my journey in the world that Nicky Charles has created.

Thank you, Nicky Charles! You have given me so MANY hours of enjoyment! I love escaping into the world(s) that you've created. I fall in love each time (& I also appreciate the lust, as well!)! Keep on writing & I promise to keep on reading!

"The Keeping" book #2 of the Law of the Lycans series was another good read by this very talented author.

This part of the story focuses on Ryne & Melody Greene. Melody was hired by a very wealthy man (Greyson) to interview Ryne Taylor about his photographes. Mr. Greyson is who purchased the photo of the werewolf Kane (Ryne's brother). Aldrich is a sleezy & you dislike him from the beginning. I disliked Mr. Greyson as well but as the story unfolds & you get to the last 20% you realize Mr. Greyson's reasons for being so interested in the wolf packs. At that time you have a little sympathy for Mr. Greyson.

Ryne is trying to hold Mel's interview off as long as possible all the while trying to resist her pull on his wolf. Things become increasingly complicated for all involved. Mel is not happy about Aldrich's threat to give back all the money from this assignment including expenses. Mel is trying very hard to get an interview with Ryne. Ryne is a private man & she can not even get to his house without tresspassing & breaking the law. What will Mel do if she can not get Ryne to answer her questions & turn in her report? All Ryne wants is for Melody to drop it & go away. But not so much go away since his wolf wants her in the worst way.

Great follow up to The Mating. too many loose ends at ending. Then the jump 3 years to bla? Epilog should tie up loose details not give a peek to next novel. Consider a "satisfying" ending plus the 1st chapter of a synopsis of the next book.
You gave The Keeping away to prove your writing ability, but should be charging for the books to follow.

Review by: Rachel D. Thompson on May 08, 2012 :
First off, I am not really a fan of werewolf books. But when I first stumbled across this series, I devoured the first book before forgetting about it and moving on to other things. Luckily I stumbled across the second book just sitting on my e-reader, waiting for me, and it was really like slipping back into a familiar setting, with a recognizable, lovable cast of characters. Even though this book is relatively long, I still finished it in about two days, and I'm looking forward to reading the next one.

It's kind of a shame the author is giving these all away for free, as they are so enjoyable I think people would willingly pay for them, but I also have to say that I probably wouldn't have stumbled across these if they weren't free, so it's a double-edged sword.

My only complaint is that the editing could be tightened up a bit to relieve plenty of misplaced commas and typos, but the pacing and character development are all there, making these great romance stories that are hard to put down.

Review by: Melinda Le Baron on April 28, 2012 :
This is the sequel to The Mating and while I must say that it did have more dramatic tension than the first book, there was also something missing. The two protagonists didn't seem to do much for me as a couple or as individuals either. Ryne, seemed in the first book to be irresistible and yet in this one flip flops around like a fish out of water. There is little manfully displayed in his behavior just macho over protectiveness and lust at least until the ending. This made things tedious.

Why was Melody the girl for him when that could mean the death of his former packmates? Is anybody worth that? If it was really drummed into him since childhood that the Keeping meant everything how could he even start playing games with her? Why not kill her directly? It just isn't credible. And it was so easy to guess that she would somehow turn into a werewolf; how else could they be together?

Maybe it's just me, but Ryne and Melody just left me feeling uninspired. There are two more books in the series: The Finding and Bonded. I hope they are more like Kane and Elise. It made me upset that Ryne could break up their family and kill his half brother because he couldn't keep it in his pants. What a stupid thing to do. Well, I will keep my fingers crossed for the future reading.

The keeping was the first book I red in the series and I must admit Im glad I did it that way. I was as blind as Mel, until I got to the bit where Ryne lets the readers know what he, Bryan and Daniel are. At first I thought 'great not a werewolf book' but was already hooked. Think this one has to be my favourite, but that could be because I see a lot of what makes Ryne and Mel work is what makes me and my hubby work too....

The Keeping is the second book in Nicky Charles' Law of the Lycans series, following The Mating and tells the story of Ryne, Kane's half brother. I enjoyed the story of Ryne and Melody, but not as much as I enjoyed the first book. The characters are nicely developed but I felt like the subplot took away from the main romance and it was a bit hard for me to believe that they had fallen in love. But that's just me! Still a very good book and a solid installment in this very enjoyable series.

Having read Ms Fisher's review I would have to ask this of her....Why'd you keep reading if you found the book so distasteful and full of so called "pornography" and whores? She's just seeking attention, but the kind she got isn't what she was wanting I don't think. She could use an English lesson as well, as her own writing of a review is HORRIBLE, misspellings, misuse of words, wrong punctuation, and no knowledge of grammatical correctness. Now I'm no editor, however I loved English class in school, and my 9 year old niece can write better than this chick!!! And just HOW do you miss an entire section labeled "ADULT RATING" & "Tags" with the word "Erotica" in it? Even on my tiny screened iPod Touch I could clearly see all of that.

This is just one of the 4 books in the series and definitely worth the read. The books are not "quick reads", they are long, detailed and giving lots of back ground information. While it may seem like something you don't need to know as you're reading it, it all makes sense in the end. Wonderfully written from the amazing imagination of Ms. Charles. Lycan's Unite!!!!!!

First...Please ignore the negative review posted by Suzanne Fisher. Yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion but she is wrong.

If you are looking for great material to read that will have you laughing out loud, talking to the characters, giving you wtf moments, and keep you glued to your nook, iphone, ipod, or any other device...then you have to read all four books in the Lycan Law seriers.

Now Ms./Mrs. Fisher...you first need to get your facts straight...Mel wasn't a whore. Who did she sleep with other than the main male character. Question...why did you call Armand rude and inconsiderate? What did he do too Ryne. You need to get your facts straight. Apparently you have never read a pornographic story because these books do not come close. Every romance novel no matter what genre of fiction it was under, the female has done something stupid or idiotic at one point or another.

Nicky's book are in the "FICTION" section. They are paranormal "FICTION". The whole point of "FICTION" is to use your imagination. This whole thing about weres not being able to transform instantly...have you heard of evolution? Why can't they magic their clothes on and off? If Edward can get Bella pregnant (especially since he is ice cold dead) or underworld can make a vampire/lycan hybrid (in the new movie she has a kid from the vamp/lycan hybrid), then Nicky can have her wolves magic their clothes on and off. Last, no romance novel is complete without a sex scene or two. You say you are not a prude but your review of her book as graphic says otherwise.

I LOVE this series. It is by far one of the best I have come across EVER!! The story line draws you in and hooks you through all 4 books. Each book is just as strong as the last. To the reviewer who was so negative on this story and the characters... all I can say to you is NON-FICTION. Stick to that and maybe you will find what is right up your alley. There are so many books out there where werewolves can shift at will and not just during full moons and as for where their clothes went when they shifted well that is called USE YOUR IMAGINATION. She is not the only author who has SUCCESSFULLY done this. Read Keri Arthurs Dark Angel Series where the main character can "shift" into smoke and as long as she is in physical contact with certain things like her Cell Phone or a Weapon it will "Magically" make it through the shift. But even at that it just goes to show the author is able to think outside the box and create a world of her own.
To the Author keep writing and PLEASE PLEASE do not let peoples lack of imagination or ignorance detour you from the path you have chosen.

I have to say that Nicky is an excellent writer and I love her books. She is mega talented and can paint vivid pictures in our minds from the words she uses. If you love Sci-Fi, especially werewolves, and sensual sex scenes then you should definitely read her series!

To Susanne (a few post below), this book is not pornographic and the characters were not betrayed as whores. But before you read a book perhaps you should check the Tags! You actually offended me in your post. I happen to be petite with big, and natural, boobs! I didn't take Nicky's character, Melody, offensive at all. There are petite, big boobed women in this world including my mother, my daughter, and myself! Also, I want to say something to your sci-fi comment. I happen to love sci-fi. I have watched several movies and shows were the wolves can indeed transform when they wish. Have you watched Underworld? Don't bash an excellent writer that is writing from THEIR imaginations because You don't believe it to be true. Vampires sparkling didn't stop Stephanie Meyers from becoming a best seller and on to making movies! Fine, you didn't care for this book, just say so and keep the spoilers and the rest to yourself!

This book is my favorite in the series! Nicky Charles is an excellent writer and her scenes are not pornographic. @ Suzanne Fisher to call these characters whores is absolutely wrong. It's people with a mentality like yours who set women back. Obviously u had to defend your statement by saying you're not a prude. But I'm pretty sure you are by reading your review. Hopefully you will wake up one day and enjoy good writing and sex!

I've been a faithful follower of Nicky Charles work since I discovered her enthralling story, The Mating, in late 2010 on Feedbooks through Stanza. I've never been one to read romance novels, much less supernatural romance novels. Now, thanks to Nicky, I can't imagine my life without them! They're imaginative, steamy, sexy, heart racing, frustrating, enfuriating, heart wrenching and full of twists. Everything I imagine a GOOD story to entail.

Thank you, Nicky, for continuing to bring the Laws of the Lycans to life for me and the rest of us at Lycan Link. You have a solid fanbase, and I'm proud to be a part of them! I cannot wait until you share your next project with is. Thank you, again!

I can not express how much I love this series. Nicky Charles has done a amazing job creating the world these wonderful characters live in. These books pull you in and make you feel every emotion the characters are feeling. I have read the keeping along with the other books in the series more times then I can remember, and each time I read them I find myself asking how this book is free. I am a huge fan of paranormal, sic-fy, romance, ya etc... And by far they surpass my obsession with any other series out there that I have paid for. I have recommended this book to family and friends. I could go on and on but I think you have the point LOVE this book!!!

I urge all prospective readers to disregard the review situated directly below. Not only does it disrespect the Author by revealing important plot points, it is rude and ultimately a misrepresentation of the story and author. "The Keeping" is the second in a series if Paranormal Romance novels which DO contain some adult content. This is made clear in the preview page of the download as well in the introductory pages of the novel. This content is most certainly very well written and appropriate to the storyline. It is neither overly graphic or are the characters written as whores (the very fact that this term has been used to describe any female character makes me start asking questions of this reviewer).

In review, as a long term reader of Science Fiction, Supernatural, Fantasy, Angst, Romance and Paranormal Romance (both Young Adult and Adult) I would highly recommend all of Nicky Charles's novels. She has created a supernatural world that draws the reader in with it's detailed backstory and mythological basis. Her ability to develop well rounded characters with strength AND vulnerability is exceptional and her plots in general take the reader on a roller coaster ride. As an aspiring writer I take my hat off to one of the Authors I one day hope to be. READERS, PLEASE DON'T BE DISCOURAGED.

While I think the latest Law of the Lycans book, Bonded is the best offering yet by Nicky Charles, The Keeping is still my favorite. If it were in paperback, I'd have to buy another copy by now from all the reading. I've lost count how many times I have read this book. Each time, I laugh and cry right along with the characters. If you haven't read this series, start with The Mating. I'm guessing you won't have any problem seeking the next 3 soon after. While some folks seem to be offended by the sex scenes or find the plot far fetched, I think it is superb. Nicky's books deal with so much more than just another hot and steamy sex scene. Her characters have so much depth and reality to them, I just get lost in their universe from beginning to ending of every book. The stories never seem to get old for me. To those who don't like the steamy sex parts, why are you downloading an adult romance to read in the first place? Nicky Charles has incredible talent, and her fan base continues to grow for a reason. She could sell her books, but chooses instead to simply write as a hobby and offer them for free. I hope she never gets too bogged down with all the fan mail to keep writing stories for us.I, for one, will keep reading them as long as she does. I'm also enjoying fun with other obsessed fans on her Lycan Link Facebook page!

Review by: Suzanne Fisher on Jan. 25, 2012 :
I guess I didn't read the "erotica" part when I downloaded this book.

** Spoiler Alert**
Anyway, I have several problems with this story (besides the porn). I didn't like Melody, I thought she was shallow and extremely stupid! Who crosses over a 12 foot fence when there is a "NO Trespassing" sign? NO ONE in their right mind, especially in 4 inch heels, which brings me to the question WHO wears 4 inch heels? But given this is a porn book, I guess porn-stars?? And WHY, oh WHY did she have to be petite with big boobs??? So cliche. That is an insult to petite women everywhere! And the town whore befriending the visiting whore, who would have thought? Usually females aren't that "sharing" with their sex partners, even if they feel it isn't going anywhere. Next, werewolves can't transform on a whim, this should have been called a shape-shifter and not werewolf, that bugged me A LOT. Which brings me to WHAT kind of Alpha would betray his pack and that of another pack because he was horny? It is an insult to Sci-Fi Fantasy fans everywhere. And no one else in the town noticed all the "growling"? Really?? Also, where did their clothes "magically" appear and disappear to? This was just absolutely ridiculous, unbelievable and also insulting. Why were there so many storylines entangled, it made my head spin. I didn't care about Aldrich's past, he was creep and it was evident from the beginning. I literally threw-up in my mouth a little when the sex scene on the dirty, disgusting couch at the bar. It was super-gross, who does that?? I have been drunk but never THAT drunk to just throw down on some nasty couch in a public place. It was rude and inconsiderate of Armand who was suppose to be Ryne's friend.

There were some Pro's, however, I did read the book. I was pleasantly surprised by the reason Mr. Greyson hired Melody that was an unpredictable and interesting. I truly liked Mr. Greyson even from the beginning before I had an idea what he was about. I liked the townspeople and thought this book was a good representation of a small town. There was some humor between Ryne and Melody and I laughed out loud a couple of times.

Needless to say I will NOT be reading the other books because of the graph content, I'm not a prude it just gets old and boring, if there is a good storyline you don't need nudity and graphic sex. I'm giving it 3 stars only because it had potential to be a good book, Mr. Greyson took me by surprise and that usually doesn't happen.

Watch your back Stephenie Meyer! On the heels of your Twilight characters, Bella, Edward and Jacob, is Nicky Charles's werewolf series, THE MATING, THE FINDING and THE KEEPING.

Nicky Charles writing style makes this series come alive through his colorful characters in a way only few have accomplished in modern literature.

If you are looking for a series that is written with the grammatical care of JK Rowling, and excitement that may exceed that of Stephenie Meyer, be sure to check out this series, beginning with The Mating.

Book 2: The Keeping
In The Mating, book 1, Ryne Taylor had lost out on the battle of Alpha to his half-brother, Kane Sinclair. Marla, one of the pack members had been playing the brothers against each other including making it look as if Ryne was guilty of sabotaging the pack. After it was all said in done, Ryne thought it best to start his own pack. He found a place in Stump River, Ontario, Canada. Two others came along, Bryan who had grew up with Elise and Daniel who was from Kane's pack. Ryne was handsome and arrogant both in human form and as a sleek black wolf with blue eyes, and he knew it. He had no plans on settling with one mate. When Melody Greene came to town, his inner wolf disagreed.

Melody Greene was hired by a Mr. Greyson to interview a photographer. The money she was getting was enough to quit her waitress jobs and finish school so she could become a reporter.. Should be an easy job to find this Mr. Taylor, interview him, and collect the rest of her money. Wrong. Mel went to Oregon where the store was that Mr. Greyson bought his wolf picture. No one would talk about Mr. Taylor because of some affair he had with the sales gal there and the scandal of her keeping his money from the sales. By chance she was able to find he now lived in Canada. Once she made it there it was no easier. The man did not want to be interviewed. And he was not the older man she expected but a young handsome playboy type.

Ryne's wolf keeps wanting to get closer to Mel but the danger she is to the pack keeps Ryne cautious. If a human finds out about a pack the Keeping law would need to be enforced, either the humans with knowledge of them must be silenced or else the pack members would take poison after sending the pups and others to other packs.

Ryne don't know if Mel is aware of the Lycon community, Mel does not know why the interview is so important to Mr. Greyson and neither does his lawyer, Leon Aldrich. The more Aldrich threatens Mel to get the job done or he will sue her, the more pressure she is under to get the interview the less Ryne trusts her.
**Warning: Please note that her books contain mature subject matter (sex, some language and violence) and are intended for adult readers.

I'm right with Doris Holmes' review on this one! Absolutely the BEST one of the series! I too wanted to pick up the phone and call Kane! When Elise barged in refusing to leave, I found myself in tears along with her. This was a perfect continuation of the story. Your character development is superb. I've read this one three times and plan to read it yet again very soon. Melody is a bit frustrating at times, but she has just enough spunk in her to keep me from wanting to smack her. Ryne is so hot and sexy, I thought I'd melt in my living room every time he growled! One thing I was disappointed about was the loss of Lucy. It would have been great to explore a relationship with her and Armand in a future book. Thanks for yet another amazing free offer! Wish I could give it 6 stars!!

Although I liked the first book in this series, The Mating, I enjoyed the second book even more! After The Mating I was left wondering what would happen to Ryne and the other two males who left with him. A big "thank you" to the author for carrying on the story.

I thought the author did a better job at putting this story together. The overall writing was better, and the characters were better developed.

Melody was a very likable character, and I enjoyed reading the book from her point of view, and I was very, very pleased in this book to get Ryne's point of view as well. I love being inside both of their heads to know what each is thinking throughout the story. That was one thing I really missed with the first book, not getting to see things from Kane's point of view as well.

Only two things I didn't like about this book...
1)I was pretty sure about what was going to happen and how it was going to end pretty early on in the story. Although the author did throw in a couple of little twists, it was pretty predictable. Still, though, a very good read. I found myself staying up a little too late to try to get an extra chapter or two in each night! I cannot wait to read the third book, The Finding (Bryan's story).

2)Why did Lucy have to die?? I really liked her!! In all reality, she could have stayed behind in Stump River instead of going to Chigaco with Melody, and the story would have been exactly the same, minus the few lines about her being killed. It didn't change anything else about the story, and I really liked her!!

I've read all 3: The Mating, The Keeping and The Finding. Awesome books!!! Didn't want the stories to end.

Great plot. and the characters! I don't think I'll ever forget Kane, Bryan and especially Ryne! Can't wait to read about Damien and Samantha!

Hope you'll come up with another equally fantastic story/series after this one. Can't wait for the succeeding books! Thank you for sharing your stories!

This book picks up in the perfect place after the last book, The Mating. It is a new tale for Ryne while building on the readers existing knowledge from the last book without rehashing the same events. Brilliant! As soon as I finished The Mating I wanted to know what happens to Ryne, Bryan and Daniel. I was glad to see the story center around Ryne and Mel. I can’t wait to see what happens to Cassandra Greyson!

I love it when a sequel starts with a new story but entwines with the original story so that the reader can catch up with the orginal characters. Nicky Charles does this to perfection in this tale and as it develops you know where the story is hopefully going to go to keep the series alive. Would recommend anyone to read this series.

Review by: Poets of TNBW on March 11, 2011 :
This book is better developed than The Mating and more sexy than The Keeping. Ryne is more likeable character to me than his brothers. I thought of all the books, the bar scene in the start of this one really set the flavor of the town well.

The book gets bogged down somewhat in the middle later half once Mel gets to town. I like the tension of the possible mass suicide.

What I absolutely could not buy was Mel's use of the Lycan website. First, that she found this website at all by accident is absolutely not believable.

Second that she could be thought to be a Were without blood samples or an actual Were parent listed. What exactly were they researching? Her mom's diary? I felt that was really reaching.

I thought this book had a lot more action than the others and I liked how it was done. The fight scene was really good.

The sex was hot (unlike The Finding).

Lucy's death seemed to gain very little and didn't really further the plot. Why kill her? It might have been better to keep her as a human 'who knows' then the bear/Lucy love book would have been a nice add-on to the book series.

Killing her doesn't do much but get her out of the way when she wasn't in the way to begin with.

And why show the full sex act between her and Ryne. I mean I don't have to see the sex with them to get that when he comes back from it, he's still unhappy. I'd rather keep the sex scenes on him and Mel.

Otherwise he comes off as more of a dick than he needs to be.

Daniel and Bryan in this book are more or less interchangable. I wish they were more distinctive as people.

Mel gave up a lot for Ryne and he just expected. She only gave a token resistance to staying in Canada.

She also adapted to pack life easily. Which struck me as too easy.

The book has less padding than the Finding but there are still places in the mid half of the book where sections could have been cut or tightened to make the book tighter.

Overall, a very good read. The best of the three books available so far.

This may have even been better then The Mating and I thought that was really good!
Ryne is living in a small town in Canada now and a reporter is out to find him for an interview about his photography. She has already visited Oregon and mentioned the Wolf photograph that was sold to a collector (in The Mating) so he is wary of her and yet his wolf don't want to stay away.
I find it unique that Melody and Lucy form such a strong bond.
Can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Second book in the series and, just as The Mating, an amazing book!!! I loved every second of it. Ryne was incredibly hot but impersonal with others, and the way Mel managed to break down his tough defenses and sneak into his heart and him hers was absolutely captivating. Loved the book, would definitely recommend. Just everyone should read The Mating first to better understand what's going on. I loved that Elise and Kane were present in the background throughout the book!!!

I found this book browsing my phone app 'aldiko'. I read the Mating first, I loved the Mating but found it a little predictable now and than, especially in the end. The keeping though was superb until the last 3 chapters. I didn't like certain things like {spoiler alert} Lucy dying, although that could still have a reason. Losing Cassie for 3 years, that sucks. But what put me off most of all was the 'were-bear'
story. That was just a step to far for me. But besides that I really REALLY am looking forward to the finding!

Wow!! Terrific book and continuation of the series. I loved The Mating, but The Keeping was even better. So different from anything I've read in the paranormal genre, and I have read a lot, YA and adult reads. The main characters in the first book, Elise and Kane, and Ryne and Melody in the second, have great chemistry. The secondary characters are not just in the background, they are significant to the story line, as is re-visiting the beloved characters from The Mating. Such vivid and well thought out descriptions of everything, their surroundings and lifestyle, draws you into their world. I had a hard time putting this book down. I finished both books in 3 days and would have been done in 2, but work and daily chores were calling.
Some many questions were answered, yet so much is unresolved, which means that this series has got a lot of life left in it. We know that The Finding is in the works (so looking forward to it), but our other weres need their stories told too!
So, Nicky Charles you have got yourself some serious fans, and we NEED you to continue this story. Thank you for offering your books for free, in my opinion you put some of these well paid authors and publishers to shame. I would give you more than 5 stars if I could.
Thank you to Smashwords for a great site. It is easy to use and navigate. Love the Prude filter, nice option, even though I don't use it. I have spread the word about your site and look forward to using it in the future.

I didn't think it would be possible, but I preferred this book to The Mating! Towards the end, I found going to the bathroom an unnecessary chore because I couldn't put this book down. I could understand why Melody was still in love with Ryne despite how he treated her throughout the story. Sometimes you just can't help falling in love with someone, and their attraction was something more than that. I didn't find the two heroes as likable as Elise and Kane, but the plot in this story was much more interesting, and the twists not as predictable as The Mating. The antagonists in The Keeping were also more thought out, and I couldn't guess their hidden agenda (which was good). I can't wait for the next installment, although in the meantime I think I'll read The Keeping again. Well done on another great book!

I like the fact that the author is able to combine the steamy erotica aspect within the framework of a really good plot and that there are some nice twists and turns so that the story doesn't end up too predictable. I am really looking forward to the next book and I would definitely be willing to pay a reasonable price for it. Review by: Emma Baker on Oct. 29, 2010 :
This book was well written in some ways, but the author spent too much time on extraneous stuff that seemed to serve no purpose in developing the story. At first I kept expecting something to happen, because lots of times in stories when there is a lull in the action, it means something exciting is going to happen, but it didn't.
Another problem I had with the story is that the hero had little appeal. He pretty much seemed like an unfeeling sort of person. He kept thinking about killing the heroine every day (to protect his pack) right up until the end, and this detracted greatly from the romance. It annoyed me that the heroine could fall in love with him, after he blew so hot and cold no matter his excuses. Even if he hadn't been contemplating her death, he kept thinking he could never get hitched up with a human besides which he never wanted to care about a woman that much anyway. I just don't like this sort of 'hero'.
I also didn't like it that the author killed off a likable secondary character, (unless she's going to come back as a vampire in a later book.) The introduction of a new character late in the story detracted from the main story. It would have been better to introduce her early in the story or only in the epilogue.
I see that lots of other people really liked this story, and I think I would enjoy the author's writing if she cut out stuff that just slows the pace of the story without really contributing anything and if she made her heroes more likable.
There were some places in the story where it would have been more effective if the reader was given other points of view besides the heroine's such as the hero's provided he wasn't thinking of murdering her.
The thing is I was enjoying the story quite a bit at first and was really disappointed when it bogged down in the things I've tried to describe. It just sort leaves you hanging and you want closure. So, since the author asked for reveiws that's what I did.

An exciting book. The author is adept at weaving verble pictures. This is an adults' book. Not recommended for underaged young people. No cursing but does contain erotica. I liked it more than I expected to. I'm going to read "The Mating" now. Sharon Mc Govern rsmquilts@aol.com

This book was wonderful! I loved that we got to visit Kane and Elise again. Ryne's story is awesome. Many times I
felt my heart pounding and I was reading as fast as I could to get to the end. Well done, Ms. Charles!! I look forward to "The Finding" and beyond. It is great these books are free, but I would pay for books this good.

As with "The Mating", this book was sooooo good. I loved it. It made me cry, laugh, shout out loud at the characters, and kept me on the edge of my seat. I had to keep telling myself "it's only a book, it's only a book". I am looking forward to reading the next book in this saga "The Finding". Keep 'em coming Nicky!

Charles is a good author, who has great story ideas. Definitely worth the read. If I had one thing to say, it would be that she explains too much. I think this story would have been much better with fewer words. I like to let my imagination fill in blanks. I think it would have been more suspenseful that way.

The fantastic Ms. Charles has done it again! An incredibly good book with intriguing characters and enough romantic and suspenseful tension to hold the reader riveted throughout the experience. The only criticism I might offer is the jarring presence of some unnecessary sex scenes; particularly the early scene between Kane and Elsie. While I have nothing against erotic passages, and frequently enjoy them, my feeling is that if the scene does not advance the plot, reveal character, or provide motivation, it is not necessary, and actually becomes gratuitous. Of course this perceived flaw reflects only my opinion, and did not prevent me from enjoying this truly marvelous book. Ms Charles is rapidly becoming one of my favorite authors.

I absolutely loved this book! I read "The Mating" and was convinced it couldn't get any better, but I was simply wrong. I can't wait to read "The Finding" and I hope the plan is to continue with my favorite fictional characters lives after that! Bravo!! I look forward to more.

Not often does a book leave me thinking about the characters through out the day, but both The Keeping and The Mating have. Brava! These are both excellent reads and are some of my favorites on this site. Thanks so much and I'm looking forward to The Finding coming out!

Okay So Ms Charles has done it again!!!! I LOVED this book as much as I love the last one!!! I love how she incorporated characters from her first novel into this one. I said it before and I will say it again she has to be One of the best paranormal romance authors I have read thus far... And trust me when I say that I am well read in this area...But needless to say this is a must read. But if you have not read her first novel "The Mating" you should for sure start with that one for it sets up the background information for this book. Again I love her writing and can not wait for the next book in the series to come out!!! Keep writing Ms. Charles... And I will continue to read. Thanks

A sequel to The Mating, and what a fantastic story. We all wanted to read Ryne's story and Nicky has given us an 'edge of the seat' journey. I adore Ryne, and Mel is full of fiery spirit. Again Nicky throws out red herrings and twists, something she is expert at doing.

It was good to check in on Kane and Elise again, and to know they are still alive and kicking.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and can't recommend it highly enough.
