Kwetoo'unuv Walker is a Paiute kid with more interest in hunting than high school. His truant ways save him on the day the earth is invaded by the alients, and all his Cedar City classmates, along with most of the rest of the town, are incinerated.

Kwetoo'unuv loses his family, but in the wake of the devastation he gains a calling. The wolf Toovuts, ancestral god of his people, guides him and charges him to prepare a safe place and gather human survivors into it. To carry out his sacred mission, Kwetoo'unuv has to fight, hide, organize, and ultimately to lead... all of it right under the noses of the earth's new and alien overlords.
