I wish this book was 5 times bigger!! It was a great read--one of my favorites. I put it off to finish reading a classic (The Great Gatsby) which seems irrelevant in today's world after reading this incredibly poignant book by Crystal Allene Cook.

Very good read - hard to put down. Crystal has come into her own as a writer. I loved the ending which is rare for me. I highly recommend this book. If you know nothing about the area of the world or the politics that the book is about, then as a bonus, it is educational as well as entertaining.

I had written a much longer review and then it got eaten here. So, warning! Unless you sign in, your review will disappear.

Probably better anyway. Now my review will be short and sweet. I dig this book. I let my friends know I dig it. I am probably a little biased as I have read short stories of Crystal's and really liked those. The same great intelligence, love of story, interesting characters, strangeness of place, and emphasis on dynamics between people is also present in this. So go read it now!

I got a preview copy of this last fall at the event that went with it. In that version some of the formatting errors and copy editing things were a drawback, but it looks like that has been cleaned up here. I still love the painting on the front though!

When I started reading this I couldn't put it down. I don't know anything about that area of the world and it didn't make any difference. I went along for the ride. The book is a good, solid story. There are a lot of themes, but they didn't get unwieldy. A few scenes still stick with me all these months later. I definitely recommend reading it.
