International Parental Child Abduction happens thousands of times a week around the world. When one parent makes an arbitrary decision to remove their child or children from the other, only heartbreak can follow.
The world is full of left-behind, searching parents, longing for a sign their abducted child is alive, happy, safe. Many do not ever know.
The Sydney father used all means at his disposal to find his son, missing somewhere in Europe. For nearly 3 years, his search continued. The mother’s family told the father and the Federal Police they ‘had not heard from her’, ‘did not know where she was’. They appeared to be making no effort to find their missing daughter/sister and her son.
After creating a website, a Facebook page, posters in dozens of languages, liaison with international missing persons organizations, email networks, attracting thousands of supporters around the world, the father had hit the wall. Then he decided to take his push bike and cycle around Europe looking for his son. Not many of his thousands of supporters thought this crazy crusade would work, but once they knew he was determined the world-wide network of supporters rallied behind him The father was only focused on success. He said, ‘I am not a wealthy man, but I can ride a bike. So instead of chartering a jet and searching the world, I’m taking my bike to Europe and pedalling. I will carry my son’s favourite soft toy on my handlebars, and I pray someone will recognise my son’s face on my cycling shirt or his web page.’
After 6500 kilometres, 9 countries, and four months on the road, someone did. A teacher in a small school in Amsterdam recognized the boy from all the publicity, contacted authorities and a new phase of the saga began.
This is the story behind the headline stories from around the world; an inspiring true story of love and despair, sadness and grief, euphoria and depression experienced by one dad who would not give up until he found his son and brought him home.
