Humans by themselves could only fail. Society is splintered after allowing an evolving artificial intelligence, calling itself Makr run the planet's resources, saving humankind the trouble. Not all people have accepted the illusion of Per Soc. The lazy and frustrated ones did. Some even worship Makr as a god. The Outside world without Makr is hardly spoken of—a place horribly unlivable and dangerous. Makr has armies of mobile cyberts constantly seeking out malcontents.

Had the human race rebelled or unified in some way there might have been hope, but now saving the world rests on a pampered and helpless people who can hardly survive Outside. There is one man, an Insider, who can see through Makr’s illusions, who wants to know why, who wants an audience with Makr to find his lost memories. His bravery will change the world.
