Throughout history we have given power to those who seek it because it is easy to do so. Frequently that bestowing of power to a few comes back to haunt us. While there are many adverse behaviors discussed herein, the most flagrant of them come from politicians, virtually all of whom are indebted to the corrupting purse strings of corporate America for their livelihood (reelection funding.
The general history of America began with the flight of religiously persecuted, socially oppressed, or impoverished persons from Great Britain and the other Western European countries. They came to this land and discovered its freedom, challenges, beauty and resources that were beyond their imaginations. But this exploration did not include the freedom from religion, nor from those who have always sought to control and benefit from the labors of others. Given an opportunity (and it is abundant) there are those who will choose to exercise power over those who permit it. To some degree this is a necessary condition for living in a cohesive, protective civilization. Consider what society would be like if there were no rules and laws to guide us, with each person being wholly responsible for their own security. Anarchy and jungle law are the words that come to mind here. Yet this is not a compelling excuse for having governmental dictates that impinge on reasonable freedoms.
