Writing is as vital to my life as chocolate and Yorkshire Gold tea. First tea, then writing, then chocolate. Usually all by 8 AM.
Mostly, I write contemporary literary fiction. I try to combine my deep love of traditional literature with my obsession with dynamic characters and strong language. Also, inventive expletives.
My mother understood that books are sustenance, and she fed me on novels and good education. When I was 25, and had been away from home for almost a decade, she paid international tuition fees so I could attend graduate school in England. I relished every second of my time at Lancaster University, graduating with an M.A. in Creative Writing. From that moment, I started believing I could actually be a writer.
When I met a woman who could do my nails and fix my toilet in the same 10-minute span, a lot of things clicked into place. I married her when I found out she could also make the perfect cup of tea, as well as hidden passageway bookshelves, a window seat under the stairs, and a library with a ladder.
I have a secret love for personal finance, and a less-secret love for baby elephants. My Great Dane is probably the closest thing I will ever have to a pet elephant, so I have spent a great deal of time trying to convince him that he has a trunk.
Kenya works into my life plan. I don’t know how yet, but I’m looking forward to finding out! My grandparents dread the day I announce I’m going on safari.
