"An Unforgiving Land: Crippled Stray" is an intriguing blend of atmosphere, landscape, character, and mystery. Its desolate desert setting reflects the desolation of its characters' lives, especially Maude, an old woman waiting for release. Reminiscent in tone and theme of Stephen King's "The Reach," the story skirts the edges of horror while implying a larger story that concludes only within the readers' imaginations. Recommended.
