A Science Fiction Story
Is the very existence of the human race under threat?
A group of young people taking a kayaking holiday in New Zealand get caught up in a tsunami that forces them deep into tunnels they find located at the bottom of a cliff.
Trapped inside the tunnels and not realising that the tunnels are controlled by a higher form of alien intelligence, they try to find a way out. It is then they discover sophisticated technology that is beyond the capability of current human scientific knowledge.
Despite an unnerving feeling that they are being watched, they engage in some very bizarre behaviour. Their backgrounds hold more than one or two dark secrets and driven by these past experiences along with the weird circumstances they now find themselves in, they participate in an orgy of group sex. They decide to call it a group marriage and justify it as a way in which they can unite and be stronger against the unknown.
They go on to demonstrate several more of the less savoury traits of the human race, but then, to their horror, discover that they are part of an analytical observation, just like lab rats in a psych experiment, that has been created to assess their worth and effectively the worth of the whole of the human race.
Alien Abduction
Manipulated and controlled by the aliens who created the tunnels, they are then removed from planet Earth and are abducted to the interior of the moon. It is here that they are informed they have to justify the right of the human race to exist as a universal life-form.
They have become the representatives of the whole of mankind. A lot of responsibility for a group of young misfits, especially those of them that have had less than a perfect start in life. They now have to deal with finding a way they themselves can survive in this completely alien environment and also with the possibility that they may ultimately be responsible for the end of human life on Earth.
Can they cope with the enormity of the responsibility that has been thrust upon them, is it just a nightmare that they will suddenly wake up from or are they destined to be the unlikely saviours of the human race?
As this science fiction story unfolds, you are introduced to, incredible new technology and asexual humanoid forms that serve the 'Great Ones'- relics of a galactic race possessed of an ethical imperative to advance intelligence wherever it can be found.
The Day of Judgement
The quandary is however, should the aliens believe that advancement is beyond the capacity of the human race, then there is a change in imperative. It becomes one that is no longer about intellectual advancement but instead a failed experiment that needs to be ended and all traces of its existence removed. The 'Great Ones' suddenly represent a menacing and serious threat that cannot be ignored.
Clearly science fiction is a genre Markham Turner greatly enjoys writing in, this is the second of his books and is written with an inimitable style that draws on his life time experiences and imagination.
