"The Forever Star" takes place in the distant future, when the sun is dying and solar flares threaten to destroy what life remains on Earth. All hope seems lost when, suddenly, Elaine appears. Elaine has lived with her sisters on a distant world since time immemorial, and she is responsible for creating the stars. However, she has grown despondent because her creations keep dying, wiping out whole civilizations with them. She comes to Earth in the hopes of finding her purpose in life, and along the way she learns about humanity, friendship, and love. Everything about this book nailed it for me--I love science fiction with the emphasis on the science, so all the bits about stars and their lives and the technology on Earth as they tried to fight the solar flares of the dying sun, and even little stuff like the technology in Maggie's apartment... I'm sorry, am I geeking out? Anyway, I loved the premise, I loved the setup, I loved Elaine and seeing her grow, and I loved the resolution. My eyes may have been stinging at the end. Just a little.
