“I’m so sorry, Jonah. I didn’t realize anyone would be here. My roommate had someone over for the weekend and they were…being loud,” Hunter smiled sheepishly and looked at his back pack. “I can go—“

“Nah, come on in. I remember college dorm life. I had a real ladies’ man of a roommate my second year. It was annoying.” He opened the door wide and motioned Hunter in, shutting the door behind him.

Hunter stole a look at the laptop but all it displayed was the desktop. “Why don’t you put your bag upstairs and then come down for a beer,” Jonah suggested.

Hunter snapped his head around to look at his step-dad, trying to conceal the shock. “It’s all right, kid. We don’t have to tell your mother. In my opinion, if you’re 18, you should be able to drink.” He winked and Hunter’s heart jumped. Hunter had never seen Jonah in so little. The man had muscular arms and a furry line of hair running across his pecs and down to the Velcro of his tight blue trunks.

Hunter quickly looked at the stairs and nodded, avoiding Jonah’s dark eyes. “Yeah. OK. I’ll be right back. I’m gonna put my bag in the laundry room; gotta wash some stuff while I’m here.”

Hunter headed through the small kitchen into the closet that was the cabin’s laundry room. His heart was still hammering against his sternum. He couldn’t be thinking like this. That was his mother’s husband! He took a few deep breaths and set his bag on the washer before turning to head back through the kitchen.

Jonah entered from the living room side as Hunter was walking through and turned on the light. The warm glow of the low-wattage bulbs illuminated the hard lines of Jonah’s body as he moved toward the refrigerator. “You want some of the local stuff or that college swill you’re probably used to?”
Hunter stopped and leaned against the counter for support. “Um, I’ll have whatever you’re having, Jonah.”

Jonah nodded and pulled two dark bottles from inside, shutting the door with his hip as he reached for the magnetic bottle opener on the side of the fridge. With a smooth, practiced gesture, he popped open both and handed one to Hunter.

“Here’s to our annoying roommates. May our sex always be louder than theirs,” Jonah said as he lightly tapped the neck of his beer against Hunter’s.
