Book 1 in the series. More
Eelin, Prince of the trolls, is commanded to kill Annah, the girl he has pulled into his subterranean world. But he cannot kill the human whose hair is the color of the sunset he will never see as long as his domineering father, Rud, possesses the crystal that opens the last Way to the human world above ground.
Eelin is a misfit in his world. At the risk of losing his life, he disobeys his father and vows to get Annah to the safety of distant Iteria.
Annah is at first terrified of Eelin and unhappy in the bleak prison of endless tunnels. But in time she grows to trust him. Unbeknownst to Annah, Eelin is betrothed to Princess Mave of Iteria.
Eelin and Annah journey to Iteria, but before they reach the border he is kidnapped by the vicious two-headed Duots sent by his evil brother, Mars. Eelin is “calcified” in a stalagmite prison. Rud has died, and Mars has taken the powerful crystal.
Annah stays in Iteria with Princess Mave. Her strength and confidence grow. Eventually she rescues Eelin from prison. They journey back to Iteria to find the magic crystal. Along the way Annah tells Eelin she loves him, but Eelin’s honor won’t allow him to act. At last they find the portal to the human world where they say good-bye.
Eelin sends Annah home. He sits by the portal, full of despair. He is betrothed to Mave, yet it is Annah whom he loves. At last he climbs through the portal and turns to face the sun he has longed to see and, filled with hope, begins his journey in the human world.
