Despite his own assertions that he is not an academic, Seán Fitton has done his research and in an easy to read and entertaining style, takes the reader through worlds of history, literature and even music to examine the core of what constitutes the spirit of Dionysus.
The story behind Dionysus himself is followed by relevant examples of the continuing influence of ecstatic experience in many belief systems of the world, including Christianity. Modern examples of this spirit are cited and the reader is treated to samples of poetry and literature which have influenced readers for centuries towards oening the mind and freedom of spirit.
I think this book would be relevant to anyone with an interest in spirituality, history and/or the Arts in any form. Dionysus has inspired writers, painters and musicians throughout the history of the Western world and Fitton's presentation of a wealth of information in a fairly short book is done well and in a rousing manner that helps the reader feel what it is to experience the Dionysian spirit first hand.
