Taking leave of Wyn’s mother, he turns right at Beddau Square and loses his way in the narrow
country lanes beyond Castellau. The signpost indicates “Gwynfa”. Richard had never heard of the
place and it was probably not on the map, even if he had a map. When he reaches The White Horse
Inn & Hotel, there is only one car parked in front, an old Ford Capri. He pushes the swing doors and
enters the bar
“Friends die; friendship doesn’t,” Huw the barman at The White Horse Inn & Hotel philosophises
as he wipes the counter.
Succumbing to a mood of warm, cosy nostalgia, Richard decides to stay a few days longer.

“Don’t be afraid to look back,” Richard had said to Cynthia. “We can’t know where we’re going if
we don’t know where we came from.”
Recalling past memories in the same way, he thinks of things forgotten that should have been
remembered and things remembered that should have been forgotten. Perhaps the unimportant
things are more important than people think. The warmth being reflected inwardly rouses him.
Thoughts come back to him like old friendships. Reminders of his childhood with Wyn in Auntie
Hilda’s garden or their bicycle rides through the Vale of Glamorgan until they felt bold enough
to reach the sea. Recollections and images of the period of strongest commitment in his life and
the fellowship and shared purpose that bind a rugby team together. The commitment to give all
unselfishly and almost sacrificially. Shake the snow dome and watch the players inside fly around.
The referee blows the final whistle, the players settle on the bottom of the dome and normal life
is resumed. That part of his past had been condemned like the snow domes to cardboard boxes
in the cellar. The women in his life: Moira, the beautiful eighteen-year-old, hand-made nesting
doll, nervously licking her bottom lip with the tip of her tongue; Moira wearing a beautiful short
dress with vibrant colours, tempting enough to make a monk renounce his vows; Cynthia and the
revelation that they loved each other without realising; Trisha and her lemon squash, processed
cheese slices and wholemeal crackers; Jennifer wearing a little black stretch satin dress, with a V-
neck, that elongated and flattered her figure; and Meryl with her bag and uniform and her unusual
headwear.

Life in Gwynfa seems quiet and undemanding; just what Richard needs. It has a cosy linearity
harmonising with the melody of inner peace that Richard had thought lost to him.
Then comes a welcoming change in his cosy routine. She is curves and softness, a Thyiad, having
unwittingly wandered into a remote Welsh village. Richard waited impatiently for the fair-
buttocked postwoman to stumble through the door.

A story had ended and began. The final note would never echo into silence.
