Rated 4.00/5 based on 2 reviews
In this third volume of the David Birkenhead series, David Birkenhead, former slave and recent Academy graduate, finds himself defending a deserted outpost against overwhelming odds. It's the third book in the David Birkenhead series, and by now things have settled down a bit. That means Lieutenant is less painful to read than its predecessors. But now we finally get to see what war is like, and it's just despair, misery and death, with very little actual fighting. Which makes this book less like your average military sci-fi, and more like an eyewitness account of a real-world war. By no means unusual in mainstream literature, but still worth noting.

Lieutenant also asks a difficult question: if you're going to die anyway, and nothing can save you, is there a point in fighting to the bitter end? What's the difference if you die standing? Isn't that just more pointless suffering? Dignity is just an abstract concept after all.

I'll let you find your own answer in the book.

Hardships of space and unexpected command and incredible odds. What more can be asked for? Our favorite slavebunny again proves to be a fabulous character in a compellingly told story.

-1 star for editing, but do read it anyway.
