Poppy and Ivan had five children and a very rocky marriage relationship.
She opens the story with a scene: Only a few days before they have to leave the house, Poppy is told that her husband has secretly arranged to send her and their five young children to live with his sister on a distant and primitive farm. He was not going. Poppy was very upset; and instead, she accepted a job with her brother as cook for his logging camp.

She tells of meeting her husband, falling in love, getting married and happy for a few years. Ivan quit his job and started a business of his own. Poppy and her husband came from two different cultures, belief patterns, values, and very different personalities. She learned from Ivan his expectations of what a good wife should be. The relationship worsened. Failure in business was not as much a problem as the reaction to it was.

It was a time of trials and tribulations, when women had few rights and men were more important. The law was geared in favor of men in domestic friction. Poppy tried to get out of marriage in the only possible way, but it was unsuccessful furthering emotional mistreatment, suppression, and making life more miserable. Ivan ordered her to leave in middle of night without saying good-bye to her children and never see them again. She did not leave, but sank deeper into despair, near suicide.

A marriage counselor 50 years ago took her husband's side. She felt humiliated. Years later, the marriage finally ended when their house mysteriously burned down. How did the fire start and by who was the question. She was finally able to separate. No one would listen to her or take Poppy's fears seriously. Finally, again years later, she came across a counselor who listened and was helpful.

The story is interspersed with funny things the children said and did, of Poppy's growing up years, Ivan's family, and some revealing information about his family.
