Short description

In 1862 a massacre occurs in a Kansas town. In 1997 Andrew Stone returns to that town after a decade in the army. He finds his former lover in danger, his father dead, militia patrolling the streets and a historian using chaos theory to identify the man behind the massacre. Will Stone save the town or spark another massacre? The Heart Lands is a novel of love, greed, redemption and revenge.

Extended description

The Heart Lands is a love story, set in both the 1800's and the 1900's. The Heart Lands is a tale of violence, interweaving the U.S. Civil War and the Mormon Wars of the 1800's with the militia movements and the U.S. Special Forces of the 1900's. The Heart Lands veers from the present to the past, from humor to passion to violence, but it does so deftly and easily. At times it is slow, and the beginning four or five chapters switch from character to character rather than follow a linear thread. However, the novel is not meant to be a page-turning thriller, but more a literary adventure like many of Robert Stone's novels. And as we delve into the story of Andrew Stone's romance with Sydney, we find all of the good and all of the evil that can result from falling in love and the breaking of hearts.
