That night saw Cherry standing nervously outside the door to the Professor's rooms, in a well-cut little black dress, pearl necklace, kitten heels and clutching a glittery silver purse.
He opened the door and she relaxed. He was wearing a tweed jacket, moleskin trousers, and brown brogues, for all the world like he was on a hunting trip. In the 1950's. On anyone else, they'd have looked a prat. But he wore his anachronism with the louche confidence of James Bond, and his self-assurance made Cherry's heart flutter.
"You look delightful," he said with obvious pleasure on his face. She smiled back, and waited to be asked inside.
But he didn't invite her in. He stepped forwards, out of the room, forcing her back into the corridor. "So, let us walk a while to work up an appetite. Such a pleasant evening, don't you think?"
"Walk?" Damn the man. Damn all men in their multi-purpose footwear. "I'm not dressed for that."
"Oh, well, I could carry you."
She squared her shoulders. "That won't be necessary." May as well bow to the inevitable. What did he have planned? If it turned out to be a walk to the fish and chip shop, he'd be walking home alone.
They left the old stone house and walked along a path that wound between neatly clipped hedges and gardens. All the younger pupils were in their houses now, doing prep or relaxing with the other boarders. In the distance, they saw the silhouettes of some sixth formers as they went for a run around the grounds.
She waited for him to initiate conversation. After all, the walk had been his idea so she followed his lead. Clearly he liked to be driving events.
So they walked in silence for a few minutes, and she held her nerve, resisting the urge to chatter about inconsequential stuff. Eventually he did break.
"I am always curious about a young woman who appears as a teacher in this school, when she arrives with no family and no friends. No ties elsewhere. Are you running, or are you seeking?"
"Perhaps a little of both," she answered frankly. "Though I am aware enough of the pitfalls. I know the answers only lie within myself."
"Ah, you pre-empt my nuggets of empty wisdom."
"Ha."
They were approaching the stable yard. Cherry lagged a bare half-pace behind, so she knew it was his apparent meanderings that had brought them here. "Do you ride?" she asked.
"Not horses... no."
"Not horses?" She knew what she was saying, but she asked it anyway. "What, then?"
Suddenly he whipped around and came right up close into her personal space, pressing her backwards until she was against a wall. I should call out, she thought. I should tell him to stop. His long, lean body pinned her fast, and she felt his breath on her neck.
Her heart hammered, and she didn't push him away. Instead her hands stroked up the sides of his body, up under his jacket, over the soft cotton of his shirt.
"Not horses," he said, his voice low in her ear. "But I do like what I ride to be wearing leather. Would you like to come into the tack room with me?"
"But my dress..."
"Don't worry," he said in a rasp as he stepped back and took her arm, leading her into the dimly lit room. "It won't get ruined. Because I want you to take it off."
