Romantic Drama is a short anthology. There are four stories which follow the same thread, the emotional ties that bind two people giving them the strength to overcome all obstacles. The obstacles are varied, they are the difficulties that wear away the bonds of love and ultimately destroy many relationships.
The barriers in The Brass Ring are diametrically opposed backgrounds and material value systems. Harper Grayson, was raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains. When the story opens it is circa 1955. He is a trapper and hunting guide like his father who died when Harper was in his teens. His father had taken him to the city to sell his furs on the last few trips before his death. Harper didn't like the sights and sounds of congested city life and spent as little time as possible there, only staying long enough to sell his pelts and purchase supplies. The girl, Jenny Lee grew up in a small foothill town along the Blue Ridge Mountains. Her father, like Harper's died when she was a teenager. She had watched her father work long hours to provide for the family, and she took a job as a waitress to help her mother after her father's death. She didn't want to struggle all her life like her parent's had. She was relentless in her desire to have the better things in life. She believed gold is all that glitters, and had plans to move to the big city of Durham, North Carolina, but she didn't want to lose the man she loved, Harper Grayson.
In An affair of Honor the obstacles are cultural differences and prejudices. A Mexican girl, Margarita Ramales is in love with a young white man, Peter Vanderwaller. Her father insists she marry someone of Spanish heritage, and Peter's family thinks he should marry his own kind. Margarita's aunt, Carmela Zabaleta, acts as a buffer between Paco, Margarita's father and Margarita and also between Paco and Peter. She offers sound advice to Margarita and gives Peter an insight to the Ramales' family and Mexican traditions. She is less successful with her brother, Paco. Margarita's logical reasoning and Peter's tenacity and desire to do what is best for Margarita increases the tension between them and Paco before becoming a significant force that opens Paco's mind, and resolves the multi-faceted issues that arise.
The pressures of raising a family and providing for them in America are the obstacles in Roadside Motel. Karen, a housewife resents her husband bringing his work home instead of spending more time with his family. Karen feels trapped in the rut of providing the everyday needs of her family. Her selfless life screams out for a sense of self. Karen is captivated by the amorous attention she receives while in a women's boutique. A romantic interlude heats up the story and raises her out of the selfless drudgery she has endured.
The love and passion which exists in A Tenancy of Love is burdened by poverty and years of daily dawn to dusk toil to obtain the bare minimums of survival. Sarah and Henry are sharecroppers who eke out a bare existence while raising a child. Despite only having a couple of hours a day together, Henry's caring and tender attention to his wife, and Sarah's steadfast commitment to her husband keeps their focus on their love for each other. It is through their passion and a plan to improve their future that raises them above their physical pain and wards off the despair which could plague their lives.
