James Ward Kirk’s “Insane Brain” is a collection of flash fiction and short stories, some of the horror persuasion, while others are thrillers, and even a smidgen of science fiction thrown in for good measure.

Among the flash fiction, is “Pandora’s Box”: a loose woman finds terrible purpose in that which she carries. In “The Werewolf Next Door,” a vampire plots the destruction of his werewolf neighbor.

Now, on to the short stories! In “The Rose Garden,” beneath a man’s misery creeps an infidelity that threatens to consume him. In “My Personal Dream” abuse is experienced and love longed for, while a man’s mind twists and turns. “Ghosts in the Mirror” is about a writer of murder mysteries hot on the trail of the murderer of his family. In “Meeting God,” witness an unfortunate child, the victim of an abusive stepmother. He is alone in this world, and contemplating murder… “Synesthete”: Lazarus is a grave robber, and Monarch is remaking him. She flirts with the grave, but soon learns that it is reaching for her.

The book now launches into a series of short thrillers, featuring Monica McDowney Private Investigator. The story “Meat Eater” brings her to face a beast in human form. In “Two Birds,” she teams up with her detective friend to stop a killer who can clean everything but the blood off his hands. In “The Mirror,” she confronts one man's dark reflection and the hate that cuts deep and burns long. And in “Rebirth,” she must stop one of history's greatest villains from returning in a new form, to wreak havoc on a young country.

A real treasure trove of the bizarre, “Insane Brain” will leave you wondering what is real, what is right, what is wrong, and what is hidden in the recesses, waiting to be revealed.
