on Dec. 21, 2010 :
The Women Debrowska is destined to become a Top Pick among book clubs and readers who are hungry for a saga of love, inter-generational (and international) family affairs and history.
Anatola Debrowska is struggling with midlife boredom when the child she gave up at birth arrives at her door – a fully grown man. Pyotr’s appearance inspires Anatola to re-evaluate her past and reach for a more purposeful future. Although Podgorski’s story begins as personal quest, it quickly evolves into a discovery of Polish heritage and a family tree ravaged by oppression, revolution and a passionate attachment to homeland.
The Women Debrowska is Podgorski’s first novel, but her credits as playwright, documentary filmmaker and humanities professor, have prepared her well for this rich mix of personal feminist statement and historical drama. The dialogue is heartfelt and rings true, while the narrative is by turns elegant and blunt.
An excellent choice for groups or individuals who relish stories that follow a central character who is not afraid to confront the emotional and intellectual forces that shape identity.
