These are alarming statistics for those who seek the stability of an intact family as the ideal arrangement for raising children and attaining personal fulfillment. Sometimes I read the Sunday engagement announcements and try to pick the couples who will not make it. It is sobering to realize that I have a fifty/fifty shot at guessing correctly.

However, in a divorce or any type of personal litigation, the parties need to hear and comprehend many new and important concepts that may be at variance with misconceptions they hold as a result of discussions they have had with friends or relatives, and whatever they have observed on television or at the movies.

Bitter feelings and pre-conceived notions often appear in contested divorces, and can actually impede or hamper the attainment of results the parties really want to achieve. These negative feelings and preconceptions can become roadblocks between the professional and the client.

Over the years I have discovered that many clients get confused or ask the same questions over and over again. I hope this book will help answer questions for clients in a divorce, help clients know what questions to ask the professionals they have retained to represent them, and provide an overview as to what to expect in the divorce process. Open communication is an essential element in all relationships, including attorney –client or therapist –client. It is my sincere hope that this book facilitates open and meaningful communication between all involved in a divorce, or potential divorce situation, and will ease you through a difficult time. This book is to be used with an attorney. Pro se divorces are not recommended.
